I'm okay with trading away Eloy + Cease. But I more like Quintana than love him.

I know the Rays are still competitive but I wonder how much more expensive Archer would have been.

This really clears up a lot of stress in the coming offseason.

Another lefty SP to throw at the dodgers if we ever get good again

Pretty sure they don't have that issue anymore

And we're back.

I'm guessing the Cubs agreed to let the Sox do the media rounds first because I haven't heard anyone from the Cubs comment yet. Apparently Jed will be on the score at 2

Taylor's emergence and Puig and Turner pulling their weight have made a big difference, but if given the choice I'd still rather throw LHP at a lineup featuring Seager, Gonzalez, Bellinger, and Grandal.

Really like it, sucks to see Eloy go but he's an A ball hitter and this FO can find another one of him in INT FA. Glad we moved Cease now since it's far more likely he dies than contributes to the ML level because TINSTAAPP. The years of control is huge and Quintana could put up ace or near ace level production for the life of the deal. Also another lefty starter to throw vs Dodgers and Nats in the playoffs with their best hitters being left-handed.

Does this solidify The White Sox as the top farm system and us among the worst?

The White Sox now have 9 prospects in the top 68, and 2 of the top 5, while the Cubs join the Royals as the only 2 teams without a top 100 guy.

This is where I'm at too.

Since 2013, Quintana has the 7th highest WAR amongst starting pitchers.

What else do those two teams have in common? :-)

I know a few of you have mentioned potentially trading Eloy when his trade value was maximized but they definitely did that with Cease. He desperately needs to get increase innings and avoid injuries to avoid being a Georgian Julio Urias.

Rizzo and Quintana have to have two of the most team-friendly non-rookie/post-arb contracts, right?

Bumgarner's is really good ($12M in each of next 2 seasons), but, yes. Without looking it up I'm guessing Rizzo's is the biggest steal among such contracts in baseball.

A World Series win followed by abrupt plummet to mediocrity?

Holy horsefeathers check out this take from a Brewers forum, lol

"I like this trade for the Brewers, but not really because of how it affects us this year. For this year, the only difference is that the Cubs now have one more incredibly tough pitcher that we have to face, which is obviously bad for us.

However, by gutting the top end of their farm system, this puts the Cubs into a pretty limited competitive window, rather than Stearns' approach of trying to make sure we consistently have talent coming up from the minors. Hopefully this will coincide with the Brewers rebuild just hitting its stride, and we'll have an opening to dominate the NL Central for years while the Cubs go through another rebuild."

More good stuff and by good I mean some of the dumbest stuff I've seen lately here.......

Eloy likely was always going to get traded, either now or in the offseason. We needed to get a good pitcher under control at quality prices because there was no way we were going to give big money and years to two pitchers in the same year with Lester still on the books.

Plus, I'd rather give the big money and years to an offensive player like Harper.

Also I read a passage in Verducci's book yesterday were theo talked about hating to gut the farm system to demand 95+ win teams every year with the red sox and how he wanted to have a bridge year. Considering we're under .500 and 5 games behind a playoff spot in the loss column i wouldnt have minded this being a bridge year for the Cubs.

So Arrieta and Lackey make about $31m this year and will be off the books.

Quintana will make ~10m a year each of the next 3 years. Obviously we'd still need to fill a rotation spot but thats $21m in surplus funds for.....Harper?

Where's the other 24m?
