The signing of Duensing right after the Rangers announced they were out certainly appears to be the Cubs positioning themselves to go into the season with Montgomery in the starting rotation.

i think all it does is free montgomery to play the swing role again and make spot starts without relying solely on wilson for left-handed relief when monty is starting.

I think if The Cubs get Darvish or bring back Jake Montgomery is traded.

Highly doubt that unless there’s irreparable relationship damage with him not being made a starter

I'm a bit surprised that the rough idea of 4/60 or 5/75 or so for Cobb seems to be something that's too high for teams. I think I'd be fine with a straight 4/60 for Cobb, but it sure looks like the market is going to be a lot more down than it seems (certainly, part of it may be that there are still so many options available), unless a team steps up.

It does make Cashman's idea that Darvish might be closer to 5/90 seem a bit more plausible.

Curious which team is going to blink first. Thing is, some of the teams rumored have positioned themselves so that they aren't in desperate need to jump hard (Nats/Yankees/Cubs). Curious if a team like the Twins, who are a bit more desperate, may go hard for someone now and try to wrap something up. Honestly, as badly as the Orioles have bungled this off-season, 4/60 seems borderline doable for them, so I wonder if they get involved.

Phillies have been wanting to make a splash ... these numbers seem fine for them, which would give them flexibility to trade assets for more pitching.

Chris Archer told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that he does not expect to be traded before the start of the 2018 season.

"I’ve talked to (GM) Erik (Neander) a lot and he’s made me feel pretty good about being with the Rays in 2018," Archer said Wednesday. The 29-year-old right-hander was certainly shopped this winter, but the Rays' asking price has remained sky high even after a couple of somewhat underwhelming seasons. Archer is under contract through 2019 with club options for 2020 and 2021. Whatever uniform he's wearing, he carries major fantasy upside as a high-strikeout No. 1 starter who is capable of better ERAs going forward.

Following acquisitions of Verlander and Gerrit Cole, the Astros are looking pretty full in their rotation these days; specially with elite prospect Forest Whitley sitting in AA and not far off from the rotation. With that said, what does it take to land Francis Martes? He's a year off of being a top 30 prospect in the game with 2 plus pitches and a third above average. It looks like he's going to the pen again this year in lieu of putting him in the rotation. It's pretty clear he's never going to get a shot in Houston so I'd love to give him his shot in Chicago.

Verlander and Cole are controlled for 2 years. They can slowly bring Whitley and Martes along and keep them around in case of injuries. I don't think they intend to trade him. He will only be 25 when those 2 are FA.

I mean they likely lose Keuchel and Morton (will be 35 as a FA) in a year and Verlander could blow up at any minute at his age/miles on the arm. It makes sense to hold on to those younger arms so they don't need to spend big money on SP if they decide not to (or even use them to upgrade during the year or next offseason if/when Archer, Stroman, etc. are available). It also protects against regression (Verlander/Morton) or injury (Keuchel hasn't exactly been able to pitch a ton of innings for a TOR option the last 2 years). All that depth allows them to go super-pen in the playoffs too and spot start a guy or two here or there during the year to not have Cole/Keuchel/Verlander hit crazy innings this year as well.

I'm guessing the ask would be abnormally high since they don't have any glaring holes at the moment on the roster and it provides them nice insurance as I laid out above. It's not that it isn't a good idea or even fit for us but I don't see the urgency or need to move one of those guys if they don't get an overpay.

Just finished reading Passan’s The Arm and now look forward to Future Cub Trevor Bauer. Currently he is in Arb 2 of 4 with a $1.225 gap between his number and what the Indians offered, the only Indians player going to arb this year.

He seems like a real prick but from just a pure baseball/looking at his fangraphs page standpoint he’s a guy I’ve long wanted to have.

You really need to read the book. Love him after reading it.

I have it and started it when I had a few hours on a plane for a business trip last year and got a few chapters in then kinda forgot about it once I got back home. I've been meaning to finish it since that time and have just been kinda a lazy procrastinating bum in reading books in general lately that I'm trying to change (I use to read a lot more).

Bauer told someone to commit suicide on Twitter. That's not the kind of guy I want to have to root for, and definitely not the kind of person I want my son paying attention to.

I mean... some random guy told Bauer he was welcome to quit Twitter and that no one would miss him so he told the guy he was welcome to quit life and that no one would miss him.

Immature? Yes. But I’d wager that most players your kid likes have done far worse.

None of that makes his behavior remotely okay. I don't know what kind of person flippantly suggests suicide to a stranger, but I do know I want nothing to do with that dude.

Shrug. It’s definitely not cool but I also think it’s a stretch to say that he’s suggesting suicide. It read as more of a stupid comeback than anything.

Ervin Santana is out 10-12 weeks after finger surgery. Does this get the starting pitcher market moving?

I'll take "Who is Ervin Santana" for $500, Alex.

who is ervin santana would be a really bad jeopardy category for a lot of reasons
