Oh, then Luis Perdomo...Maybe Mejia on the Twins? I'm going to stop guessing on this now.

Perdomo is a decent option if the Padres are done with him as a starter. The deluxe option would be seeing if the Rangers want to give up on Martin Perez and turn him into another Wood/Montgomery.

Maybe Tom Koehler?

Going back to this...How about Patrick Corbin? Throws hard for a LHSP and has a couple useful pitches in his slider (whiffs) and changeup (groundballs). Pre-TJ Corbin might have become a first division starter. Maybe in a reduced role he could be an impact pitcher again? I also believe Anthony Banda from that org is going to be a quality ML pitcher. Arizona's got the kind of park I could see Almora doing well in full time.

Trevor Bauer? I'm not sure he's a guy to quit on as a SP yet.

I don't mind the idea of Corbin, but I'm not sure the Diamondbacks are interested in creating a hole in their rotation even if Corbin has been the worst starter so far. Plus even if you do trade for Corbin and he turns it around, he's a FA after 2018 so the risk/benefit is different than most people in that Montgomery/Arrieta mold.

I liked Bauer this offseason and still don't think he's a bad target, but I don't see much motivation for the Indians to move him. They're still giving starts to Josh Tomlin after Salazar gets healthy so Bauer is no worse than the 4th starter on a team with competitive aspirations.

Not that this particular move is going to happen but this is another reason why it sucks that the Cubs have struggled so much so far this year. Teams like the Cardinals who should be 10+ games out of 1st are confident to pull a trigger on a big move or two and become more formidable threats in the division.

As for Milwaukee I'd prefer that they buy blow up their farm

I'm so conflicted on the concept of pitch framing. Does it make such a sizable different that it makes sense to go after someone like Avila? If it does make a big deal, does acquiring a TOR pitcher and starting them instead of a guy like Lackey or Butler mitigate that to a large degree (beyond the obvious discrepancy in talent)?

Yeah I hate this relatively new concept of "Pitch framing" or "Disceiving Umps" or "Stealing Strikes" -- whatever you want to call it. It's dumb and makes fans angry when it happens against your favorite team.

Some fans actually like this and claim it's part of the "human element" of the game, but again that's a dumb argument. You wouldn't argue for a system like that in society where you can fool a cop or judge some of the time.

Get a horsefeathering Automated Strike Zone and I don't really care what technology you use if it's accurate and reliable. It's going to be better than human Umps, will reduce the game length because managers and players will complain less about the strike zone, and will benefit players (like Rizzo and Zobrist) who know their strike zones really well.

Oh, and the last thing is we won't have arguments about acquiring crappy backup catchers and debating whether they're good at "pitch framing" or not.

I agree with 99% of this, but anecdotally I feel like Rizzo probably gets favorable calls more than most other players given that his hands start about an inch from the defined strike zone.

Britton's pricetag is probably outrageous(he also just had a forearm injury), but Brach might be a nice addition for the stretch run and Koji replacement for next year.

I'm into it, Gausman's the pitcher they should want anyway. I think you suggested it, but I'd take Gausman and throw him in the pen.

Gausman gives up a ton of first inning runs. Bullpen seems like a lousy place for him.

That is not how it works, the stuff he'd have as a reliever is not the same as it is as a starter. Also, Gausman hasn't been *good* the first time through the order, but hitters improve with each subsequent PA.

A Britton/Davis back of the pen would be pretty amazing.

and Britton is under control for next year so good replacement for Davis if we don't extend him

i was just wondering this morning if the cubs might make a push for him. he's got one year left after this year, which would make it easier to let davis walk. what type of package would the cubs have to put together?

curious how the packages for him, hand, and wilson compare should they all get moved. i'd love to add any of the three.

What would it take to get Britton 1 of Almora or Happ and Jeimer (potential Machado replacement) and some minor league fodder?

I've seen Almora and Happ posted several times like they are in the same tier. I think Happ is for sure a tier above Almora. I'd give up Albert as the headliner for Britton but not Happ.

Having Edwards as a seventh inning guy would be pretty amazing, too.

Being able to go Edwards/Britton/Davis from the first sign of trouble in the 6th in a playoff game to the finish would be quite nasty.

Britton, Gausman, Joseph for Jeimer, Zagunis, Clifton and Caratini. Who says no?

The Orioles.

Britton has one more year of control after this. Despite the forearm injury, the trade package is going to have to rival the Chapman trade for the Orioles to move him.

Yeah, then I think we would be out. Wouldn't hurt to see what it costs. Would Brach be a better target if we're looking at pen arms or would he cost just as much?

I know we've been mentioned with Brad Hand but the Padres are asking for an Andrew Miller return.

i don't know, i'd be thrilled to have him, but would be worried about overpaying for him when we're a coin flip to even make the playoffs this season

Coin flip? We're only 3 games behind Milwaukee in the loss column. Even BP has us at 60% for making the playoffs and they are the most pessimistic of the projection systems.

Britton and Jones are both under control for next year too.

I'm not a big fan of Jones though, His numbers have really dropped off the last couple of years.

Britton is under control through 2018, so think of it as paying a little more for having him around for the stretch run, and then doing your Davis-replacement shopping early. Also, Fangraphs has the Cubs currently at 83% odds to make the playoffs.

That said, I don't think Britton will happen. His injury should lower his value, which in turn lowers the incentive for the Orioles to trade him. That tweet is just a guess from a random MLB person/exec though, so it's less viable than the average rumor on top of it.

Yeeeeeeesss pleeeeeeasssseeee

I'll take Adam Jones too

I mean if the Orioles say the Cubs can only have Britton if they take Jones too, then sure sign me up. If not, I really don't want his awful defense and .301 OBP anywhere near this team
