That horsefeathering elbow better hold out for 50-70 innings this year+postseason innings

Between horsefeathers the closer and our many bullpen options, I'm hoping we're very conservative with him in the regular season. Then Joe can go full Chapman (only please not with a 4 or 5 run lead this time) mode in the playoffs.

If this deal turns out poorly, I can just go watch the World Series video and I'll be 100% a-ok.

That's loser talk, we're trying to build a goliath here

royals fans seem to hate the trade

I think the average fan sees the closer as the 4th or 5th most important position on the team with a good one very hard to find. So, it stands to reason that they'd also view a closer traded for a 5th OF as a bad deal.

From outside Cubs fan perspective, Jorge Soler is about to turn 25, has been in the league for 3 years and has hit a serious plateau of "not very impressive". He looks good and does awesome things from time to time, but you have to expect huge improvement to be happy with him.

From a KC perspective I'd think best case scenario is they are looking at an Aramis Ramirez situation, when the Cubs traded for him from Pittsburgh after an injury plagued age 24 season. The difference is Aramis had already had a breakout year that Soler has not come close to matching. Jorge is a little more patient and strikes out much more. I'm not sold on Jorge taking the next step. If he does, I can live with him playing in KC (and then eventually the Yankees).

Davis, Rondon, Strop, Edwards, Grimm, Duensing, and 2nd LHP(Zastryzny/Montgomery) makes a full pen. Edwards and Zastryzny are the only optionable players. Have a hard time seeing too much sense in adding a significant bullpen piece unless it's really a SP in disguise, or they do something more decisive like trade Grimm or Rondon.

Jed's news conference I thought he might say the 9th inning guy would be a competition going into spring training, but he kinda squashed that and flat out said Davis would be the closer. Wonder what Hector is thinking? Hopefully this just gives him more motivation to be ready. I also love the idea of getting Holland too, the Cubs can afford to be patient with him. Now trade for another starter so Monty can go back to the bullpen and we're set, or at least resign Travis and leave Monty as the #5.

But Duensing is nothing to hang your hat on and that 2nd LHP is a big question. So I see 5 solid spots, three of them being injury concerns that may need the occasional preventive 10 day DL stint, plus these guys are not afraid of an 8 man pen.

Who cares?

Nevermind the fact that I don't see how anyone could have expected otherwise (as to Davis clearly being that guy) either.

Gonzales mentioned LHP specifically, which does make a lot of sense if they really are going to give Montgomery first crack at the 5 spot and get an optionable 6th starter. My point otherwise was less 'the pen is too good' and more that you don't really have the flexibility to truly realize the depth you're adding. Like if Duensing or Grimm could be optioned, that'd make a lot more sense because you can hold on to the depth if everyone is healthy to start the year. As it stands now, if you add anything besides a LHP and/or Montgomery gets bumped from the rotation, you're looking at cutting someone by opening day.
