Maybe someone can convince me it's smart, but I am absolutely opposed to giving out 5-year contracts to a closer, much less for $90m or whatever.

I'm fine going there for the elite of the elites with no prior injury issues in Jansen and Chapman on top of them still being youngish. I get being against, and agree, not going there or in the 4/60 range for the Melancon's, Robertsons, etc of the world

There's just not much precedent for closers as dominant and as young as Chapman and Jansen hitting FA.

It won't happen, but imagine if the Cubs swooped in on Jansen now. You could basically have hockey lines of elite relievers.

Cubs would basically have 9 innings to beat a team for 5 innings.

I mean it sounds cool but what is that actually worth

It's worth $90M from a team about to win back to back World Series and also get their own TV network.

ok but really. is going from rondon/edwards/strop/davis to edwards/strop/davis/chapman(or Jansen) worth $18m a year?

Honestly, I don't expect a lot from Strop or Rondon this year. They worry me.

And I don't expect the Cubs to go after Jansen because I think they are trying to build Edwards to be the closer for next year with Davis in the helm this year.

But yeah, I think another World Series while basically cutting the game down to 6 innings max is worth 18M, if they chose to go that way.

I fully expect Strop to be Strop. That was just a leg injury and he should be fine heading into next year.

Rondon? Dunno. He still had the velocity but the command was missing. That could be a sign or it could have been something that will be okay with rest.

Yeah I think Strop is going to be his fine, solid self. I don't have a ton of worry there other than the basic worry of RP attrition. Rondon I do worry a lot more about, I more expect his arm to just completely blow up than get back to where he was in the first half this year or anything resembling it.

going from edwards to jansen doesn't really guarantee a world series i dont think.

I find it hard to believe that neither come back to their old selves. Even if they do, Edwards and Grimm or Edwards and Montgomery (assuming someone else ends up in the 5th starter role) would make pretty good set up guys for Davis. If Strop and Rondon come back to their old selves, this bullpen is the best in baseball.

I appreciate how historically dominant Chapman has been, but I would be really scared about that contract. The way he was hittable under Maddon's playoff workload might be a preview of what things will look like when he loses just a slight tick of velocity off that arm. I'm not sure he's someone who is going to compensate with better movement, control and/or pitch IQ with age.

I think Nightengale made another typo, this time about the position of one of the White Sox players. Judging by the replies he confused Robertson and Frazier.

There are so many different baseball players. It's hard to keep track of them all.

Rockies are in deep talks with Trumbo. Would then play him at first, move Desmond back into the outfield and trade Blackmon for pitching.

If that happens I could see Blackmon to the Cardinals for Weaver as the main piece.
