Could it be Candelario for something?

That would seem to make sense.... Maybe it's just for an arm reliever, but if it's the start of something bigger.... How much value does Profar still have? Could him and like Soler lead a package for Odorizzi?

I kind of doubt it. He's down to 3 controllable seasons and obviously has lost lots of value too. He'd be a guy to try and get though, if you were moving Javy in an Archer deal though.....

Very true.... The FO may see this as a prime opportunity to sell high on Javy if they don't believe in him long-term offensively. Profar would be a decent sub on the bench taking Javy's spot. There's also this, i.e. Profar

SEASON OVER

I think Jesse Rogers tweeted earlier they were looking for a veteran catcher to stash in the minors. Don't think the intent is to carry 3 catchers like last year, just have a Federowicz type guy in Iowa for emergencies.

Oh, I know. Just poking fun at Fed's uselessness.

Yeah, figured you were just joking just more clarifying if anyone on the board was confused with the tweet what the intent of "3rd catcher" addition would be. Part of it too is to probably have a veteran guy in AAA to coach Caratini along.

Will still love Dex but it will be a really uncomfortable sort of love.

We can give him a standing O right before we beat them by 5 runs.

Also we can give him his ring with a whole nice pregame ceremony when the Cardinals come to Wrigley, which would be a nice bonus.

(I'd still rather he go elsewhere...just saying).

From GRB "Goold on Fowler -- "Money isn't the issue. Opt-out years. Age at end of contract. Length of contract" are the deciding factors."

Sounds like they might be close on a contract. Except for the parts about the years, or the options, or opt outs, or you know only minor things....

It would be so awesome if we swooped in again and stole and OF from them. Especially if it's because we gave Fowler an opt-out after this year and next and they wouldn't and he ends up coming cheaper than their overall offer.

If the Nats get Sale they are going to trade Gio Gonzalez apparently. I think I'm mildly intrigued by him, he makes $12 mil this year and has a team option for the same next year. He seems like a decent 5th starter/swingman guy at worst and nice replacement of Hammel in the rotation and allows us to keep Monty in the pen and/or even worth trying to turn into a version of Andrew Miller. The cost should be lower than getting an Odorizzi type, you'd think, if the FO feels those prices are prohibitive.

Beginning to hope that they'll be able to make a 3 way deal for a SP capitalizing on the interest in Soler, this would be another move in that category.

A 3 team trade with Soler to the Rangers, Profar to either the Braves or Dbacks, and one of their pitchers coming back to us would make some sense. Other players would be added to even things out obviously. Both AZ and ATL appear to have full-ish outfields and could use a middle infielder.

Why is anyone panicking over a transaction this FO may or may not make? I think they've shown us that they mostly know what they are doing.

I will be excited that they made a move, and then pretty bummed out that the move is for a short term acquisition(especially if it costs major trade assets), and then cognitive dissonance will kick in and I'll find a way to justify it so that it's actually brilliant.

The last part has already started btw, the working theory is that pending FA are a market inefficiency because you can't plan super far ahead with any certainty anyway(especially pitchers), so the upside you're sacrificing isn't as great as thought.

don't do it, dex

I think all things being equal he signs with Toronto. Dex seems like the kind of guy who wants to play for a fun team in a fun city and Toronto fits the bill much better than the cardinals.
