Also Gomez is bad and crazy

Seems weird coming from you as you seem as willing as anyone to look at arbitrary endpoints/trends on guys and Gomez really only had a really bad 85 games in Houston this year, but otherwise was great in 2013, great in 2014, very good in 2015, and very good to great in his stint with the Rangers in 2016.

97 wRC+ in 2015, 83 in 2016, and his defense has also seen a precipitous decline to the point where it's fair to question whether he can play CF anymore. He's a late bloomer who always relied on extreme physical gifts to be successful, and since those gifts are starting to wane you could see things fall apart pretty quickly. Also he is a literal crazy person and that's not going to get better as he starts declining. I see his Texas performance as a death rattle more than a resurgence.

A reasonable position...but at that salary I'm willing to roll the dice when the upside is something resembling his good years and what he did in Texas over Jon Jay at about the same amount.

100 percent agree. He started to regress his last half season in Milwaukee and his routes in the outfield are God awful.

Congrats to him that he went to Texas for a few months and hit better in a park that does that for many.

Thank God people who wanted to trade for Gomez or sign him for $20 per a few years ago didn't get their wish.

Ahhhhh, those savings got us Brian Duesing (spelling?).

I also just noticed his 2015 numbers even are brought down by being awful in Houston. Maybe it's just something in the water.

Or maybe Tal's Hill gave him anxiety and ruined him.

It's not so much that they gave Desmond that much money(although ZiPS is probably more optimistic than it should be), it's that you used that money(and a very valuable draft pick) for very little reason. The Rockies have too many OF already and their infield is set aside from 1B. So if the plan is to play Desmond at 1B, then that contract is an incredibly bad idea, as the Rockies especially could get any number of players to match that production for less.

I mean, think about how close that money is to getting you say, Jansen. That would be a bold move that could really help them make the leap, all Desmond is going to do is provide enough depth so they don't lose 100 games if things go poorly without moving the needle in a positive direction.

Also GRB thinks Adams, Weaver and Rosenthal is preposterously too much for Blackmon......

Well the Nats apparently only wanted Sale and are now no longer interested in acquiring a SP. Turning focus to closer, center field, and possibly a SS.

Their 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th SP on their depth chart are Joe Ross, A.J. Cole, Reynaldo Lopez, and Lucas Giolito.

That's nice depth to deal from. Any chance the Cubs try and deal for one of them while dangling Almora or Baez or both?

Joe Ross would be your safe bet, but I'd gamble on Lopez, with Giolito likely still too costly. The stuff is so filthy that even if he can't manage to hold up as a starter you've got a true dominating closer in the making.

So the Rockies are planning on Desmond being 1B, when he is a better defender than Gonzalez. Ok........

Also, remember when they gave Parra a three year deal last year? You'd have to think another trade is coming somewhere.

I think the Rockies line of thinking is

A) Acquire Desmond, give up 11th pick

B) Trade Blackmon or CarGo and get real value to win now and replace Desmond at their position. Both Blackmon and CarGo are garbage defenders while Desmond proved to handle the OF effectively enough this season (and much better than either Blackmon or CarGo). Getting talent back to fill holes in the pitching staff for them > losing the 11th pick, I suspect

C) Still make a play for Trumbo for 1B

If they can get Trumbo, and take advantage of Blackmon's big year to get the pitching they need, their lineup will look something like:

LaMahieu

Desmond

Arenado

Trumbo

Story

Blackmon/CarGo

Dahl

Murphy/Wolters

That's a sneaky good offense. Desmonds AAV is $14 million, it's not going to be difficult for him to fulfill his end of his contract unless he just falls off a cliff.

How the hell did Tampa get Ramos at 2/12?

He's rehabbing a torn ACL still. He probably won't be 100% for 2017 when he comes back a couple months into the season, so 2018 will be his "make good" year.

He might not be able to play until after the ASB. Maybe that was he highest offer/only 2 year deal he had out there.

He also has incentives that can pay him another 15-16 mill over those 2 years.
