Sure, the Division races are all but over, but there are still 3 teams vying for 2 wild cards in the NL, and 7 teams vying for two wild cards in the AL.

Dan Vogelbach makes his MLB debut for the Mariners in Anaheim. He swung at the first pitch and hit into a fielder's choice after beating out the double play. Went first to third on the next batter's single, but was ruled out for having missed second base.

Giants wow.

It's going to be Mets vs Cardinals for sure.

Cardinals going to take 3 or 4 from Giants to bury them.

Yeah this is the ultimate high stakes playoff matchup. Beating either of those teams would be so damn gratifying but losing to either would be so damn painful. I know any playoff loss is damn painful but there is a slight but noticeable difference losing to the mets or cardinals than losing to like the Diamondbacks or something just like beating the Cardinals last year was more satisfying than beating the Braves or something

The Mets, Giants or Cardinals are an awful trifecta but I will be happy if the Even Year [expletive] does avoid the postseason because I think the second they hit the postseason in a year thats divisible by 2 and they are guaranteed a World Series appearance

Man, the Giants' collapse is really kind of astounding. But I'm in this weird place where I don't wand the Cards to make the playoffs because they're the horsefeathering Cards, but I don't want the Giants to make it because they're pretty easily the most threatening (potentially) team in the WC race (IMO). The Mets would be more intimidating if 2/3 of their vaunted rotation hadn't died.

It's a shame Miami and Pittsburgh horsefeathers the bed.

If the choices are Giants, Cards, Dodgers or Mets...my choice would be the Cards because they're the worst team on that list by a pretty comfortable margin. It'll be fun to watch them kick the ball all over the field in a playoff game.

Someone mentioned it here earlier but the only worry about the Cards is Matheny doing something dumb and starting Wainwright in the WC game because of veteran horsefeathers and then getting Martinez to start Game 1. I feel like the Giants and Mets, assuming they don't go down to the last day, would be weakened more by having to start Thor and Bumgarner in the WC game.

But even then, I think I'd rather have the Giants miss out completely because even if Bum starts the WC game, you still get Cueto in Games 1 and 5 with Bumgarner in 3. Those two guys only start 3 games regardless in a DS (Bum in 1 and 5, Cueto in 3 if Bum can't pitch the WC game). With the Cards, it's maybe Martinez in 1 and 5 if Matheny is dumb.

Mets definitely get hurt the most by the WC game, though.

Us vs. Martinez this year... 4GS, 24IP, 24H, 9BB, 3HR, 14R, 14ER. The last 3 starts he's given up 13 runs (4, 3, 6) and given up 21 hits in 17 innings. I'm not all that afraid of facing him. But I get the overall point, Giants I least want to face.

The Cubs are very clearly better than all of these teams, I'm not going to worry too much about which of them has a 2 or 3 percent better chance than the other when I can hope for the maximum amount of pain for the teams I dislike. Since the Pirates and Marlins(who are no angels themselves) aren't going to cooperate, I want the Cardinals to miss the playoffs entirely, the Mets to die a very quick death, and to smite the even year nonsense ourselves.

I really want a tie for the final wild card. I want to burn the top guys as much as possible. Throw in some extras too

It depends on when the tiebreaker would be played. If the tiebreaker is on Monday after the season (which would make sense as AL WC game is on Tuesday), then you actually put yourself in a position where the team's ace can go games 2 and 5, although it's highly likely that team uses their ace on Saturday or Sunday. If they use the ace on those 2 days and advance to the LDS, then the ace is set to pitch game 1 (if they don't start on short rest in WC game or come in relief).

wow, orioles were a game back from the red sox going into tonight. orioles were down 7-6 in the 9th, managed to get 1st and 3rd with 1 out but then struck out back to back to end the game. meanwhile, the yankees' (still nominally in the chase for the wild card) bullpen imploded, with the red sox turning a 5-2 deficit into a 7-5 win in the 9th inning. hanley ramirez 3-run walkoff home run. all 5 of the red sox' runs scored with 2 outs.

Hawk and Stone have spent the entirety of the game tonight talking about the Cubs and how the only difference between the Cubs and Sox was schedule luck in May. And now they're talking about how often the best team doesn't win the World Series.

What happens if there's a 3-way tie?

The 3 teams, prioritized by head to head record, choose spot A, B or C. A hosts B, the winner is the first wild card, the loser plays at C. The second winner is the second wild card team, and the wild card game is played.

Pirates are well on their way to sweeping a double header against the Reds. Barring catastrophe on their end, a Giants win means the Cardinals are closer to the Pirates than the 2nd wild card. At the moment standings:

SF +1

NYM -

STL 2
