Last month of the season, here's some weird stuff

Yunel Escobar is hitting .320, 4th in the AL.

Albert Pujols is leading the AL in RBIs with 110.

Khris Davis (35) has more homers than Chris Davis (34.)

Yasmany Thomas has the fifth most homers (27) in the NL, one more than Anthony Rizzo.

Yasmani Grandal has 24 homers in just 330 at bats, a better ratio than Giancarlo Stanton (25 HR in 381 at bats.)

Jed Gyorko (28) has more homers than Bryce Harper (23.)

Adam Duvall has hit only four home runs since Aug. 1, and Trevor Story hasn't played a game since July 30, but Duvall is still third in the league in homers and Story is fifth.

Justin Verlander, somehow good? (209 strikeouts in 195 innings, 3.28 ERA.)

The top nine pitchers in strikeouts are Scherzer (243,) Jose Fernandez (224,) MadBum (217,) Chris Archer (211,) Verlander (209,) Price and Sale (193,) Kluber (189,) and Thor (188.) Who's tenth? Robbie Ray (183.)

Also weird: two different sets of parents had babies and thought "Yasmany/i" was an awesome pick for a name

not to mention the several millions of parents that name their kid some variation of Muhammed. What's the deal, Mark too bland for you?

don't forget that jacoby ellsbury has reached base more times by the "tapping the catcher on the shoulder just before a pitch so he looks to see who it was but it was just a trick and jacoby ellsbury gets to first on a dropped third strike" thing than he has from actual base hits.

It's a very popular name, especially in America.

Dozier has a legitimate chance to set the all time single season record for HR as a 2B, which is currently 42 by Rogers Hornsby in 1922.

In 45 innings since the end of April, Zach Britton has allowed 1 ER (that's a 0.20 ERA).

Brad Miller has 26 home runs despite never hitting more than 15 in a season in the minors.

Ryan Howard has 56 hits this season, 20 have been home runs.

The MLB leaders in wins are Rick Porcello and JA Happ.

Some ex-Cubs fun:

Blake Parker is getting late-inning chances with the Yankees now.

Darwin Barney somehow has a 1.9 bWAR and a 1.3 fWAR.

Chris Rusin somehow has a 1.5 bWAR and a 1.3 fWAR

davey johnson hit 43 home runs as a 2B in 1973.

i remember that stupid fact because sandberg was the first 2B since johnson to hit 40 or more home runs when he did it in 1990.

Since there isn't any other active thread on this forum about stats I'll just put this here: Are there any live baseball databases available online that allow you to run your own custom SQL queries and joins for your own analysis?

In a perfect world I'd just like to pull in a live datafeed into a local SQL server instance, somehow.

it would lead to a lot more weird stats generation.

I don't think all were while playing 2B - at least 1 was as a PH.

Eh, I don't know if I got all the quotations inside quotations right...anyway, I get that the name Muhammed is an unoriginal name, but to practitioners of Islam -- its kinda important and special. It's like Catholics in Latin American countries naming their kids "Jesus" or something.

I wouldn't go around calling it "just a dumb name is all". A very boring name and a way to get your son "randomly selected" in airports in the future, but it's not a dumb name. That's kinda offensive...

the rangers just moved to 36-10 (.783 winning percentage) on the year in 1-run games. their expected won-loss record is a game or two over .500, yet they just won their 90th game.

meanwhile, the other teams currently projected to make the playoffs have a 194-185 record (.512 winning percentage).

The Rangers are currently 13 games better than their pythag record. If the Cubs were 13 games better than their pythag (which would be a 19 game swing), they'd be 115-36.

Haven't posted in forever, but love this fun with sample size stat:

Mookie Betts at Camden this year:

516/595/1.290/1.885

It was over .2000 but he only went 3 for 5 last night.
