Maybe that they do well in all types of 1-run games? If this were only happening in 2-1 and 1-0 games, it might be indicative of having a few strong starters, with a lock-down bullpen, and maybe sprinkle in some elite defense. But, that's not really the case, anyway, as their bullpen has been bad. But, being 13-4 in one-run games in which they've given up at least 4 runs is really weird.

I guess I never really saw it as anything very skill or merit based and mostly just dumb luck, so I hadn't given any thought to the whys.

Same here. I do find it somewhat interesting that they've had this type of dumb luck in all these different types of games, though. I guess that's to be expected when their record in these situations is so crazy fluky, though.

meanwhile, the other teams currently projected to make the playoffs have a 194-185 record (.512 winning percentage).

I don't understand what this means.

In one run games.

My favorite thing to do with Mike Trout is see where he falls in the all-time WAR rankings.

At his current pace, he'll surpass Ken Griffey Jr in three seasons.

He doesn't have a lot of these 9 and 10 WAR seasons left because the defense is gonna be a negative here pretty soon, but at this point it would be a huge upset for him not to finish with 100 WAR, which would put him in the top 20 of all time -- a list that is like bonds, ARod and 18 dudes who played in totally different eras.

probably passes David Ortiz by June next year

edit: already has exceeded totals from some HOF like Puckett, Dale Murphy

The defensive metrics on Trout baffle me. We all know whatever saw when he showed up in the majors. Griffey level defense. Two years later UZR had him as a -10 defensive CF'er. Was he really that bad or are the metrics just really flawed with a player like him? It baffles me how someone can go from generational defensive center fielder to average/below average without injury and long before he's reach his prime years. Edited by The Logan

If he moves out of CF, wouldn't he probably get a bit of a boost by playing RF? He's still a pretty stellar athlete, even if not the same as when he broke in.

i'd imagine a lot of that boost by playing RF is mitigated by the decreased positional value.

I think UZR is just a mess and doesn't work super well

We'll get much better ideas about defense in the years to come with all the statcast stuff going on

defensive metrics can vary a lot from year to year. overall he's been pretty close to average (for a CF), which is obviously insanely valuable if you can hit the way he does. one year that graded out as elite and one that graded out poorly.

trout was +13 once, his rookie season. Griffey had a four-year run of 11.5/14.8/33.5 (!!!!!!!)/16.8 in his mid 20s. If Trout ever ripped off a 33.5 season in CF he'd be like 13 WAR lol

orioles' catcher caleb joseph set a live ball/position player record for most at bats/plate appearances without an RBI in a single season. he had 132 at bats and 141 plate appearances on the year, and posted a line of .174/.216/.197/.413, for an OPS+ of 11.

congratulations to caleb on this landmark season.

DJ LeMahieu won the NL batting title by sitting out on the final day

He actually sat out 4 of the last 5 games which is shameful IMO. He won it by 1 point over Murphy. Weiss made some remark about how if Murphy was playing then he'd let LaMahieu play as well

LeMahieu had around 50 more plate appearances over Murphy, so meh. Who cares?

I started typing up a rebuttal that talked about how LeMahieu certainly deserved it with his play all year but just doesn't seem right to win it by sitting for that long. Then I started to have 'you are paid to play the game' arguments pop into my head and I immediately canceled my post scared that by using phrases like 'shameful' and 'paid to play' I am morphing into Colin Cowherd or similar meatballery. AGHHHHH!!!
