Javy’s trash. Cubs could go dumpster diving for him as a FA

He's probably going to end up being worth 3 wins this year which isn't great but not terrible for a high profile FA but honestly isn't that far off from contemporaries like Corey Seager (only full season since 2017 was 2019 and he was worth 3.3 wins. Currently worth 1.4 fWAR in 260 PA this year), and Trevor Story (2.5 wins in 40 more PA than Javy who is at 2.1). Only Correa (4.7 fWAR this year) stands head and shoulders above the rest. If other teams prioritize the other 3 before Javy than he may be able to be had for less than expected, and in that case the Cubs should be in prime position as there seems to be at least some mutual affinity. That is assuming that the Cubs themselves are not in the mix for the other 3 of course.

But yeah I think Javy is appreciated over time. Javy fell into the perfect situation with the Cubs where, despite being a high profile prospect was not needed to be a savior or even a top 3 bat on the team. While he struggled in 2014 and early 2015 he was given all the time in the world to figure things out and then once back on the team was eased into a starting role. Other top 10 prospects don't always have that luxury. With the expectations a little lower fans were able to appreciate the little things that Javy brings to the table and come to accept that the trade off is that his game comes with holes. I can imagine that moving midseason to another team in a gigantic media market is not the best situation to endear himself to fans.

In a post-game press conference today, Javy Baez stated that his “thumbs down” gesture during the game was a message to fans who recently have booed him and other players for poor performance. These comments, and any gestures by him or other players with a similar intent, are totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Mets fans are understandably frustrated over the team’s recent performance. The players and the organization are equally frustrated, but fans at Citi Field have every right to express their own disappointment. Booing is every fan’s right.

The Mets will not tolerate any player gesture that is unprofessional in its meaning or is directed in a negative way toward our fans. I will be meeting with our players and staff to convey this message directly.

Mets fans are loyal, passionate, knowledgeable and more than willing to express themselves. We love them for every one of these qualities.

I'm not, like, a "East Coast fans all SUCK" guy, but man, the most fun player ever comes to your team and you hate him within a month, that's a you problem. It's not Javy's fault you suck.

Seems a bit dramatic

For a while earlier this year I listened to the Baseball Tonight podcast. I eventually gave up after I came to realize it was the Buster Olney Show and he's a horsefeathering moron.

Compared to most talking heads at that Network, Buster seems like a real decent guy and I always wanted to like him. But alas, he's a moron

Just not smart business. Granted he's already probably got eff you money so who cares, but it wasn't a great look and certainly doesn't help him at all.

ETA: The good news for him is that people have attention spans of about 15 minutes these days, so it's possible nobody will even remember by today.

I find it hard to believe that MLB front offices will look at whether or not a prospective signee has been mean to fans in New York as one of their criteria.

Yeah, I think the impact is being seriously overblown. Javy's actions certainly don't help his chances of returning to the Mets, but that was unlikely anyway following their post trade deadline collapse. For every other team, this isn't going to factor into their decision-making one way or another. The only thing that is going to damage Javy's value is his disappointing performance on the field over the past few seasons.

I do side mostly with Sandy Alderson on the issue itself. I understand that you can't have players openly mocking a team's own fans, whether those fans are booing or not. Maybe the Mets could have handled the situation more quietly, but the cat was already out of the bag after Javy's comments.

Ultimately, I think this will all blow over in the near future and people will have forgotten about it by the offseason.

Javy, Lindor, and Kevin Pillar all made comments criticizing the fans. Buster goes and calls out Javy in incredibly dramatic terms, then says Lindor needs to say something(?), but doesn't mention Kevin Pillar, a dude in theory fighting for his job day in and day out. Hmmm, why wouldn't he mention Pil-

Oh. Right.

Or, it could be the fact that nobody cares what Kevin PIllar has to say.

Yeah, Squally is probably being just as dramatic as Buster now.

These are terrible takes. Three players made the thumbs down sign and one of the most prominent baseball reporters out there calls out the two minorities but doesn't mention the white guy. That's bad for a number of reasons but the main one is a racial bias. That doesn't mean Olney had a malicious intent in what he tweeted or is some horrible racist. But the difference in how minorities are described vs how whites are described in sports is most definitely a thing and affects how people view minorities in sports and in life. So while this one tweet might seem innocent, it's actually yet another data point in a larger issue with how we speak about minorities in this country.

Olney should know better and should have done better. All he had to do was include Pillar in the tweet. I get why Baez was mentioned first. While Lindor is the better player, he's set contractually. Baez is a FA while Pillar has a player option for next year, and Baez is the better player and younger player. But you can't just ignore the third player here. If Pillar was, say, a back end reliever who has gone up and down this year and hasn't pitched much, it would make a bit more sense (though he should still be mentioned). But Pillar is a regular for the Mets. He's played 97 games and had 269 PA's. Just because he's worse doesn't mean you don't have to mention him.

Guy has played 17 games as a Met and is already getting booed. I side with Javy, horsefeathers those entitled fans.

They may be entitled, but they root for the Mets. And live in NY, or worse, NJ.

I must confess that I didn't read the tweet in its entirety and was focused on the "this is going to cost Javy" in free agency and didn't even see that he wrote Lindor should have an explanation ready, too. You are totally right that if you include Lindor you also should mention Pillar.

Also, Pillar should be bashed for giving that gesture since he somehow has an even worse OBP than Javy. No wonder this team sucks.
