Yes, I'm right back to Fernandez as my dream arm to trade for. Didn't take much for him to get that back.

Maybe this is crazy, but explore a 3-way trade with someone like Houston?

Cubs end up with Fernandez

Astros end up with Schwarber

Marlins end up with Soler and Bregman

I'm sorry, but if you can find a way to not hand the ball to John Lackey twice in a 7-game playoff series, you do it.

I'm willing to let the season play out before I say that, honestly.

That's fair, but I'm not. It's hard to look at the Mets and to just *expect* to pound their pitching the way we have been pounding everyone's pitching so far. If you can get a Jose Fernandez, you do it. Soler and Schwarber and Underwood and McKinney be damned.

I don't think Fernandez is going to happen, even if the Marlins made him available. I think the front office is not really interested in that risk/reward profile. That's why they love Lester so much(he has the upside with the durability), that's why they've gone after the Lackeys, Hammels, Feldmans, and Jaxons of the world in free agency instead of the Kazmirs or Brett Andersons. That's why Hendricks was never seriously in doubt of losing a rotation spot, and why Edwards was funneled to the bullpen as quickly as he was. Upside means little when you're constantly rehabbing, especially with the cascading effects that has on the rest of the roster.

I am willing to bet he will match up favorably to almost every team's #3.

But I would like some insurance in case he's hurt/falters. Hammel and Hendricks are fine regular season guys and might even work in the postseason again, but they are already starting to struggle to go 6 IP.

Last year in the playoffs Hammel and Hendricks started 4 games and failed to go 5 in any of them, which continued a 2nd half trend of struggling to give innings.

I know its splitting hairs to worry about the 4th and 5th starters on a possible 110 win team that is leading the MLB in runs allowed this year, but I want to eliminate as many potential weak spots as possible.

I think you have to look at the Mets and the Nats and have doubts about that, though. Syndergaard (or DeGrom) and whichever arm Washington could trot out give me reason to doubt.

I had no idea that The Astros were so awful. If it keeps up, I have to imagine that they're going to be eager to flip some rentals to further beef up their young core. Though we don't have any glaring weaknesses, they do have some interesting options;

Colby Rasmus for LF; would be useful in driving right handed pitchers to drink heavily. Doug Fister could be Post-May Jason Hammel insurance. And how about Luke Gregerson or Tony Sipp as upgrades over Clayton Richard?

All are free agents after 2016, so probably wouldn't be overly expensive.

For some reason folks keep trying to tie the Cubs to guys like Reddick and Bruce. No thank you buddays!

I mean i wouldn't mind trying to get Reddick included in a trade for Doolittle, Gray, etc. But I don't see a huge need in just outright getting him.

In the game threads, don't we spend time every Reds game talking about how much of a butcher Bruce is in the outfield? No thanks.

That's an example of really bad and irresponsible piggy back reporting if it's based on the Bowden "report" I think it is.

It's just brutal, ill informed speculation. But for about 2 seconds I wanted to punt my phone just because of the thought of that scumbag in a Cubs uniform.

This is the full "report".

Possible Trade targets for Cubs between now and deadline could be dominated by left fielders with Kyle Schwarber injured and Jorge Soler not hitting. Options could include: Carlos Gonzalez, Jay Bruce, Nick Markakis, Ryan Braun and Josh Reddick

For that reason, upon digesting Monday's news, a number of general managers undoubtedly asked themselves, "Why wait for winter?" If they're going to give up elite prospects for Sonny Gray, Jose Fernandez or Danny Salazar, why not acquire the top-end arm early enough to impact the 2016 pennant race and postseason?

A midsummer trade involving Gray has become more plausible, given Oakland's 4-11 stretch entering Monday night. Miami's Fernandez and Cleveland's Salazar are pitching for contenders, at least at the moment; that would need to change for them to become strong trade candidates.

Matt Harvey is almost certainly an offseason trade candidate; even though he's stumbled early this season, the Mets can't invite the public-relations catastrophe of trading their World Series Game 1 starter while defending the National League pennant.

Also names Teheran, Archer, Moore, and Odorizzi

So basically every SP who's been in a rumor since winter who hasn't gotten hurt? Got it

So, you're the cynical sort, huh?

Give me Salazar over any of them. I've been watching him when I can and it sure seems like he is taking that next step toward Arrietaville. Ridiculously hard to hit and almost impossible to take deep. He's got a couple Cy Youngs coming.

Arrieta

Salazar

Lester

in the playoffs with this lineup and it's all over.

A team in the playoff picture isn't trading their best pitchers.

If the Yankees keep sucking, what about Miller or Chapman? With the exception of Strop, Rondon and Warren, the pen has been shaky.

a number of the guys in the pen who have been "shaky" have pretty good track records and are likely to turn it around. plus there are guys in iowa who should probably get a shot before we dump resources into another pen arm.

as for chapman, the cubs have a good thing going in the clubhouse so i tend to think they'd steer clear of a domestic abuser.

Ehh a couple of the bullpen arms we have are failed starting pitchers that we converted to relievers that had like a half year of success. If things continue the way they are then we don't have any need to acquire anything else at the deadline so we mine as well use some of our expendable minor leagues like Vogelbach and others to add a quality reliever. That being said I have no real interest in Chapman now given all we know about him.
