Is there any way we can get Fernandez and can we get him for something like Hendricks, Soler, Happ, Torres or something?

I absolutely would love to have him and I get that might not be enough but that's probably the most I'd want to give up to get him, maybe add in a lottery ticket guy like Hudson or Cease if you have to. I wouldn't go much more when you look at the other guys you could get at that price or less that could produce nearly as much.

You think Billy Beane is scared of dealing with us?

Do you think he wasn't fully aware of what he was doing when he made that trade and feels like he had the wool pulled over on him?

Scared? No. But he got raked over the coals pretty badly for it. I wouldn't be surprised to see him gun shy (or ask for a serious overpay) for Gray.

It's going to be business-as-usual. It's not a pitching trade without someome crying overpay anyway.

Billy and Theo knew exactly what they were doing, and it was all about a perfect timing for two teams with opposite wants and needs. The A's had perhaps their best chance to win it all in quite some time, and Theo offered up 2 front end starting pitchers well before the trade market was even shaping up, one of which came with an extra year of team control.

The A's need to stop being competitive first.

Also, I had visions of Teheran being the big trade target while he pitched last night. He's okay, but I'd like to aim higher in case Arrieta doesn't re-sign.

You stop filling people's heads with those kind of wicked thoughts, you hear?

Let's Re-aqcuire Chris Archer at the deadline.

Soler+Jeimer+Carintini+Vogebach to start

Hold on to Gleyber and Happ at all costs. I could see Happ coming up at some point this year and giving us a Schwarber-like boost to our lineup.

How about the Yankees continue to struggle and fall out of the race and make Chapman available?

I would rather have Andrew Miller.

Well, Miller would cost a lot more since he is still controlled for two more years after this one. Also he would cost $9 million per year in salary. Chapman is a rental guy, with a stigma attached thanks to the whole gun-shooting, domestic incident. Maybe we wouldn't even want him because of that. But, he'd cost a lot less in resources. And I don't want to give up a ton of resources for a relief pitcher, especially when the back-end of our pen is already really nice.

Whatever happens at the deadline, it is frightening that this team could become even better.

You said that as if it's for sure true. I'm not sure it is.

Yeah, that's kinda what Kyle was saying earlier in this thread. And he is looking prescient. There is definitely some law of diminishing returns stuff that goes on when you are this good. Why mortgage the future when you are already so damn good? The playoffs are a crap shoot. But it's nice to have the best team you can possibly assemble for it. But we pretty much already do have that. What's another good player gonna do, besides take away a spot from our bevy of existing good players?

Some small things here and there to patch things up are fine. Strengthen the pen, maybe. We already have bench bats. An injury could change things. But, we're pretty much set.

So, we either make a big splash on a long-term piece or just add a few minor parts here and there.

There is always room to improve. Is it necessary to do so probably not we will still have the best team regardless but you could for instance replace Clayton Richard with someone who doesn't suck and that would improve the team. It won't drastically improve the team since we won't be using him in close games but it would still be an improvement.

I think Hammel could be the Wildcard in determining whether Cubs make a move at the deadline this year. If he pulls another disappearing act (ala turning into Jason Marquis) I can see Cubs making a move. Here's to hoping Hammel has his career year this season, & the Cubs don't need to make an upgrade to the starting rotation.

Screw the trade deadline. I have no use for it.

I mean, you did see Jason Hammel pitch today, right? And Travis Wood?

Sure, but this was really the first time we had seen Hammel struggle this season.

Fair point on Wood.

I definitely want a strong left handed since Richard and Wood have been disappointments so far this year. We may need another starter to replace Hammel but he has only had 1 bad start this year so I am willing to wait and see how he rebounds from this outing next start.

Why do the Cubs need another starter? Artieta/Lester/Lackey will definitely be starting postseason games, and if they do need a 4th guy and Hammel looks shaky again after July, I trust Hendricks or even a bullpen game headed by Warren just fine. A lefty out of the pen might be all this team needs.

I'm sorry, but if you can find a way to not hand the ball to John Lackey twice in a 7-game playoff series, you do it.
