What about Strasburg. His K's are down (small sample size yadda yadda) but he has looked pretty solid this year so far. Especially if Wash continues to baby his pitch count and innings.

Something really weird would have to happen for Washington not to at least be within a couple games of a WC spot come the deadline, he's not gonna be available. I def hope we target him in FA

Yep, Dusty fell into another great team that he will make a good team out of.

Even more than another starter I want a dominating lefty reliever. I'd love to take McGee from COL or Will Smith from MIL.

Isn't Smith out for the year?

I think there's potential he comes back but idk if it's possible before the deadline, he hurt his knee (meniscus I think) and had to have surgery taking off his shoe....

I'm not sure I want to count on Hammel being good the entire year. We've got Warren as a backup plan, but there's still a strong possibility that we'll want another horse for the 2nd half.

If it was full year I completely missed that, I was under the impression it was ASB at latest.

Ahh, he's rehabbing it so he can come back earlier:

I'd rather not take a chance on a guy who rehabbed a torn ligament in his knee instead of fixing it with surgery.

The AL parity is going to make for an interesting deadline. Most of the teams will probably be within range of a wild card spot, and any team could see themselves as a solid 2017 contender with a good offseason and player progression. I imagine most of those teams are going to be looking to get near major league level talent or change of scenery types if they deal at all.

At this point, the Cubs are really taking themselves out of the game at the deadline. Unless a major problem pops up because of injury, they just won't really be able to increase their WS odds enough to make giving up any talent worthwhile.

Baez continuing to improve and play a stellar 3B pushes Bryant to LF, which leaves the Cubs with no holes that need shored up, barring injury.

If they're up 7-8+ games in the division at the break, there's no reason to make a move even if there's somebody drastically underperforming. It just doesn't move the needle enough to give up any talent.

Whatif senario:

What if they want to improve the playoff rotation. Isn't it possible that the trio of Lackey/Hammel/Hendricks is winning games but are doing it because of the offense and not because they are performing well. If Arrieta and Lester continue to be awesome but they don't feel as confident in those other guys for the playoffs they could make a play for a ToR starter.

Count on him for what? To help keep our lead at double digits?

I guess this entirely nullifies my jokey post

I go back and forth between the rational (no need to upgrade if we're already awesome) and the desire to have the bestest team ever.

Already have bestest. But I guess slotting another TORP in at 2 or 3 could make us bestest bestest.

Again, the deadline is not exclusively for players that can help over the ensuing 3 months. Prices are higher yes, but not prohibitively so in many cases. If there were someone underperforming or hurt in the rotation, the deadline would be a prime time to plug that hole and add strength to the 2017 rotation, for example.

Thinking about what could be traded from the Cubs system this year, it seems that a lot of teams looking to deal a controllable SP have wanted at least some near-ML level pitching in return. The first group of pitchers from the post-Hendry drafts is now in the upper-minors and could be a valuable asset that the front office didn't have at prior deadlines. None can really be a centerpiece of a deal, but they could help get a deal done that may not have been possible in prior years.

I wonder if the Angels would make Richards available, he's someone I would give significant pieces up for. I'd prefer him to Gray assuming the asking prices were similar.

Scratch Carlos Carrasco off the list. He was carried off the field today with an apparent leg injury, on a non-contact play covering first base.

Just a hamstring. Maybe this lowers his trade value?

We don't know the details of the severity of the injury, so even "just" a hamstring injury could be bad. MRI today.
