Dave Cameron has hated Schwarber for a long time. He thinks his ceiling is a Mike Napoli type player, which both underestimates Schwarber offensively AND defensively

One thing to keep in mind about Cameron is he's a numbers guy and a really good one, but he's not a scout. Read what Sickels has written about Schwarbs. Look at what FanGraphs own Eric Longenhagen has said about him. There are scouts that have put a FV 70 grade on his hit and power. And above all else look at how much the Cubs front office absolutely loves this kid, and honestly that's enough for me. If Theo et al believes Schwarber is worth not trading for Andrew Miller that says a lot and they have more information on him as a player and a person than any scout could possibly have.

I hope you guys aren't blind to the fact that he's probably going to struggle, at least in the first few ABs against, you know, actual pitching.

okay we will be sure to stop being excited

Omg....do you think that Theo, Jed and Joe have thought of this?

Do you know who Kyle Schwarber is?!

Yeah, he's a guy who was medically cleared to hit but not play the field and has had his knee reconstructed 6 months ago, and had a handful of ABs in AZ against high-ceiling, lower level pitching.

Unless you completely believe he's a generationally great hitter, he's not going to step in after that long of a layoff and be crushing the ball against major league pitching of the Indians' caliber, and I don't particularly give a horsefeathers how unpopular that opinion is.

As far as sarcastic responses to wet blankets go, yeah, that was pretty classy.

But you are sure as hell going to make sure everyone knows you have it, and do your best to make sure nobody can enjoy the moment.

Screw that. Fans should expect the wonderful and the amazing. Tempering expectations sucks.

Yeah, my bad for trying to inject a marginal amount of rationality to the neverending stream of posts declaring that Babe Ruth IV is coming back and is going to just crush the ball right away.

Wait, I'm sorry.

Are you seriously acting as though that was a classless response to your insistence that people are blind?

I quoted the wrong post.

But I'm insisting that people are overstating the impact he's likely to have, and I don't think its a particularly whacked out sentiment. Which is more likely: guy who hasn't faced major league pitching in 6 months struggling in a 20 or so AB sample size, or guy who hasn't faced major league pitching crushing the crap out of the ball during a 20 AB sample size?

I've been tempering my expectations my whole horsefeathering life. The Cubs are in the WORLD horsefeathering SERIES. I find nothing to be gained by further tempering my expectations.

it's baseball, so, to be honest, i don't think there's a particularly wide chasm between either of those possibilities. and a whole lot of other good ones in between.

Yeah. Tempering expectations at this point is pointless.

It's baseball. The most likely outcome of any at bat is a boring out. IDGAF. This is fun and enjoyable to anticipate and will be even more delightful to witness.

USSoccer is just looking out for everyone, guys. I mean, how awful would it be if the Cubs won a World Series but Schwarber struggled the whole time? It would ruin the whole thing. #temperexpectations

Hell, if I'm wrong, that means great things are happening and it'll be awesome, but I just have a hard time believing he's going to be any good right now.

Maybe I severely underrate Schwarber as a hitter or something; I'm just not nearly as hype as pretty much everyone else here. I don't get it.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. You hit the nail on the head. Excellent work.

good point, we should DH w/soler instead, who is guaranteed to be bad

--------------other stuff

"The Cubs have Schwarber available, so why wouldn’t they use him? Because he’s rusty? Maybe his bat is just un-tired. Probably didn’t think of that."

that's an awesome line from that Brisbee article lol. he's great
