What's the debate here? Rust?

We all know he's coming back. It's a done deal unless something unforeseen happens with a medical setback.

I'll be moderately surprised if he isn't starting at DH in game 1.

I have seen some articles stating that Schwarber should be in Mesa's lineup today. How is he able to play if he's on the taxi squad? I thought they were only eligible to play two days a week with Monday not being one of them.

Read the article linked above. Sounds like his timing is a bit off especially on offspeed stuff but bat speed and pitch selection seem to be there. I agree it looks like he will be back but I don't think its a lock just yet.

Also of note: Schwarber is 0-4 with 4 Ks in his career against Kluber, and last year he stated that Kluber was the hardest pitcher for him to hit in his rookie year:

@ESPNChiCubs #AskSchwarbs of the starting pitchers you have faced so far, who has been the most challenging for you?

Kyle Schwarber: I would say Corey Kluber, and not just because I went 0-for-4 with four punchouts. He doesn't leave many pitches out over the plate to hit. He was really fine with all his stuff. If every day was like that it would be a grind. But it was good for me to see that to know what to expect.

Maybe that won't matter, but that seems like a difficult assignment for him with so little time to hit. I think Schwarber makes the roster but is not in the lineup for Game 1, but will be DH in the other 3 potential AL games, and available to PH late in Games 1,3,4,5. Just a guess.

Maybe since it's a developmental league moreso than a competitive league, they're allowed to bend the rules in these situations. That or maybe he is not really on the taxi squad? I dunno. Or he's not actually playing.

You are correct, anyone saying that Schwarber is going to play in the AFL today is wrong.

Second time TT has been wrong?

I'm willing to go with Carrie probably being wrong.

I suspect they made an exception in this case since this is basically a rehab assignment for Schwarber if there's any sort of rule that taxi squad folks can't play on Mondays.

yeah I guess the Taxi Squad rules just don't matter, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

probably not for organizations that are still competing at MLB level. The point is to limit the number of players teams can send there so all teams can send players, it doesn't hurt to allow exceptions for actual LCS and WS teams to rehab guys. That's not a slippery slope since it is by definition limited to 4 and then 2 teams.

I never thought I'd be obsessively following an AFL game in late October like I will this afternoon. Don't get me wrong, I like knowing what's going on in the AFL, but never because it has such an immediate impact on the Cubs.

Especially a day before the Cubs play game 1 of the World [expletive] Series. I know we have some farm system junkies here, but who'dve thunk?

For the record, I think adding Schwarber onto the WS roster would be a mistake; there's no way the guy is going to be ready to hit major league pitching of that caliber based on a handful of AFL at-bats.

For the three people who will get this reference, this isn't much different than Charlie Davies and Stuart Holden trying to rush back from severe injuries to make the World Cup roster in 2010. One guy made it and played 45 seconds and was clearly not game-ready and the other guy didn't make it back and in part because of rushed rehab took 3 more years to get his career back on track.

It's not worth rushing him back.

I don't think it's the same. There's not really a way for a guy to play a limited, specific role in soccer. I don't think it would've worked in another series, but with the AL rules for 4 games, and the diminished need for a deep bullpen, I don't think you lose much by having him on the roster.

The Cubs are playing in the World Series, no one cares about your soccer stories.

Yeah. I mean the downside is he goes 0-3 or 0-4 or something instead of what Coghlan or maybe Soler vs. a righty would've done.
