Yeah, I like that idea a lot. Let them work it out during the season. Keep both of their innings down. Keep Montgomery fresh and try to keep Anderson healthy. If another pitcher goes down for a couple weeks, you can slide one of them in and it would be a reasonably easy transition. And if things go according to plan, we will have a large lead in the division and we'll be able to do these things without feeling any pressure or desperation.

Fun fact: Due to the intentional walk rule change, Addison Russell received the final 4-pitch intentional walk in MLB history.

Every team on the list saw its BABIP rise relative to the MLB baseline in the following year. Collectively, they surrendered about 56 percent of the difference between them and the league. If the Cubs stick to the pattern, their BABIP- will rise from 85.6 to 91.9, which in 2016 would have translated to .274 — which falls within the range that ranked as the most popular poll result when Sullivan crowdsourced the Cubs’ future BABIP last year. Running through the same calculation we performed earlier, a .274 BABIP would have cost the 2016 Cubs 71 hits, 57 runs, and roughly six wins. They still would have had the best record in baseball.

If Rizzo goes down on the DL for whatever injury, who takes over at 1B? Would Maddon use a platoon?

Like with any position outside C and maybe CF, Baez is the primary backup, it just might not be him playing the position. You can put Baez on the IF and move Bryant/Zobrist to LF and Schwarber to 1B. If not that, then Bryant would likely be at 1B. He started 6 of the 11 games at 1B Rizzo didn't start, and 2 of those other 5 were days Bryant also had off.

Yeah, I'd imagine it'd be Bryant to 1B, Baez to 3B for the vast majority of any games without Rizzo.

Candelario would probably be an option too.

Speaking of Candelario, I'm really hoping he takes La Stella's spot on the roster and we send Seal Boy on his way and he can go home and cry on his huge pillow. I still haven't forgiven La Stella for that stunt he pulled last year and really can't stand the guy.

This is probably a hot take, but I have to think the odds of Candelario making the team if there isn't at least one DL stint from up-roster to start the year are 0.0%.

I'd tend to agree.
