They’re due to just have like a 7-2 or 6-0 trip.

He said the same thing before the 9 game road swing the Cubs just went on and all they did was..

-blow a 2-run lead in the 8th inning

-blow a 1-run lead in the 8th inning

-blow a 2-run lead in the 8th and a 1-run lead in the 10th

Even if the Cubs win the division - I think Maddon is toast. Yes, the players have to perform but he’s at the helm. As this season unfolds, the more and more I see the FO going in a different direction.

Maddon was gone the second the FO decided not to add on another year to his deal. He's a lame duck manager.

If they win the WS, he can use the "I'm going out on top" excuse.

If they flame out and either miss the playoffs or get bounced quickly, they'll say they're looking for a new voice in the clubhouse or some other [expletive] line.

Don't know what excuse they'd use if the Cubs make the NLCS or WS and lose but I'm sure they'd have something.

Should have been sellers.

I mean I get frustration and that this team is mostly smoke and mirrors right now but name one team that was a seller when they were in 1st place at the trade deadline.

It's almost the opposite of last year, where the team looked pretty terrible for long stretches and had some pretty serious injuries and still somehow ended up with the most wins in the NL. This year we've been pretty healthy, KB and Contreras are having significantly better years, etc...and it just seems like Maddon is consistenly pressing the wrong buttons, and it's going to take a really strong finish to get to 90 wins.

I'm intrigued by the Cubs having the most wins in the NL last year. :P

Eh, to me the Brewers tiebreaker is a playoff game more than a regular season game. But...sure, substitute "95 wins" instead.

Epstein said Jason Heyward, who led off Friday’s game against the Brewers with a home run into the basket in left field, is the best option at the top of the order and is “embracing” the opportunity to spark the offense.

Epstein noted holes at second base and center field have been key issues this season and said the Cubs will “reshape the distribution of at-bats” over the final two months. That probably means less playing time for Albert Almora Jr. and Ian Happ with Nicholas Castellanos now in right field and Heyward moving to center.

“Absent adding a star, you can also make performances better by redistributing the at-bats, by making sure the at-bats go to guys that have a chance to perform,” Epstein said.

so he's going to tell the manager how to construct the lineup?

I love that our GM has to come down and tell the media :

Wild thought guys, let’s give our good hitters more at bats and our bad hitters fewer at bats

It only took 108 games for them to figure this out.

That’s mostly positional adjustment, but it is hilarious he’s only 13 points off of Almora

EDIT: i misread his baserunning stats lol

In a rather damning report on Avila’s ability to maneuver in baseball’s trade market, the Detroit Free Press learned that the GM who just received a contract extension previously refused deals for Cubs shortstop Javier Baez and Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. (for Fulmer)
