I love how in my mind I think "Heyward is fixed" when in reality his OPS is barely above .700

I've never felt like he was fixed, but at least when I see him come up I don't immediately concede he's going to bounce it to second base.

Haven't seen this posted anywhere but there's heavy speculation the Cubs will sign 17 y/o RHP from Mexico League, Florencio Serrano. Sits low 90's, Badler says his curve could be plus in the future. I'm sure most of you here already know, but just in case, if some don't - Mexican League teams normally take 75% of bonuses and MLB only counts the amount actually going to the player against the cap, so we can offer 1.2m, and it appears that should be enough, while staying within our 300K max.

Apparently they may decide to DL Zobrist today, according to my ESPN fantasy notes on my team's page.

Looks like they've sealed the deal.

What do you guys think of Almora's defense as the metrics have seen it? Is he simply too slow? Is it his positioning that needs tweaking? Only 274 innings in CF this year but -3 DRS and -13 UZR/150. I would have bought that he'd actually be average because he is really slow. But I'm surprised at how poorly he's graded.

Almora has 30 games worth of innings in CF, and UZR says he has missed 8 in zone plays out of 59, and made 18 (!) out of zone plays. We all know that UZR at 1/5 of a season levels is nigh useless, and it really is borne out if you look at that granularity because that combination seems pretty nonsensical when paired with what I've seen of Almora in CF.

I know that in general we've always needed thousands of innings to get a clear picture for a fielder but I feel like over the last couple years people have been much more comfortable citing SSS in those metrics. How many do you think will give us enough of a sample?

I think you're looking at around 1500 innings or so before you'd take any large variations too seriously, especially for someone where we have no statistical baseline.

The other thing is that you have to consider what you're measuring. For example, Bryant has a -2 UZR to start the year and I don't think that's really undeserved. It doesn't invalidate his +6 in the previous 2000+ innings at 3B, but guys have struggles defensively just like they have slumps at the plate. I still expect Bryant to be a plus defender going forward. That particular example doesn't match Almora's reputation/numbers mismatch to my eyes, but it's still an important concept.

They should do what the Braves do with The Freeze as between-inning entertainment, except have the fan race Almora and give Almora the head start.
