Probably a reason the Dodgers gave up on him.

The Cubs seem to have a real problem identifying bench personnel.  Breaking camp with Torrens.  Giving a roster spot to Rios who has no value except his bat, and his bat has been non-existent.  Choosing both Mastrobuoni and Madrigal over Mckinstry.  Signing Barnhart to a multi-year deal.  Signing Hosmer when there was nothing to indicate that he could still be a productive player. The front office has at least shown a willingness to move on when bench guys don't work out, but it certainly doesn't inspire confidence that they have missed so often.

There seems to be some buzz about calling up Ben Brown.  That sounds promising and I'm still not 100% up on our farm system, I'll look him up.  Ok, cool, he's a former 33rd-round pick who is averaging less than 5 innings per start an ERA over 4, 17 walks and 7 HRs in 28 AAA innings.  Crap-ton of Ks is nice, but still.

Every couple of weeks I get told to be excited about a prospect and then I look them up and they're the most tepid wet-turd plop of a prospect I've ever seen.  Oh hey, everyone's geeked up about this Brett Dokstra kid and Brett Dokstra turns out to be some random roster fill from the back of a draft who has managed to only be slightly worse than average at several minor league stops he was two years overage for, which I mean *is* better than you'd expect for somone in his draft slot so good for him.

If we're going to do this, I wish we could at least do the 2001/2014 version.

With Iowa this season, Ben Brown has had 6 starts. In four of the starts he's pitched a total of 20 innings, given up 3 runs, 34 Ks and 9 BBs. He got knocked around in one start, and was fair in the other (poor defense). I wouldn't put too much stock in the number of innings/start. Seems to be a legit prospect.

Why wouldn't you count the other two starts?

I'm not discounting his "other two starts", but rather pointing out how dominant he was in the four.

I love the mental image of Kyle reading about someone musing that Brown might get some time in the bullpen this year and then reacting this way to the discovery that he is not in fact Justin Verlander reincarnated

Sure, that could be your takeaway. Or you could be impressed by the Brett Dokstra reference.

Greenberg has an article up at The Athletic quoting Jed. He sounds more and more like Hendry every time he gets in front of a reporter.

Also, it's awfully nice of the Cubs to allow Bellinger to audition his versatility to other teams before the trade deadline and new contracts next offseason.

I know Patrick Wisdom has been struggling, but OOOOF:

May 1 - June 16:

.141/.248/.294/.541, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 13 BB, 47 K

He’s 2 for his last 33 with 16 Ks.

What's the latest on Cody Heuer? Saw the video of the injury on Tuesday but haven't heard anything since.

Hoping for the best but it doesn't look good.

Fractured elbow.  All things considered, maybe not the worst possible scenario?  The UCL is supposedly still in tact, but he'll be out again until at least spring training.

Report today that he fractured his elbow and had it surgically repaired. Done for the season.

Apparently his TJS went well, though, because the ligament held up so well that his humerus took all the damage.

Reading the update on Brennen Davis, what the hell is "core muscle surgery"?  Are they just making up injuries for him at this point?

assuming something abdominal

Can we please please fire Mancini into the sun? It doesn't have to be Mervis replacing him if you're going for it this year, but please someone. You can't keep giving a 1B/DH at bats when they're putting up an 87 wRC+ with horrifically bad defense.  He completely tanked that game yesterday and hopefully he didn't completely tank the momentum over the last dozen or so.

What worries me is he broke a bone doing something routine. Fractures like that concern me; there could be a little more to it. But I'm not a doctor,  so...

Anyone have Frank Schwindel on speed dial?
