From MLBTR:

The core of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series club is nearing the end of its tenure in Chicago, and president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said Thursday that there are no current extension talks with any members of that core (Twitter link via 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine). Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant and Javier Baez are all slated to become free agents at season’s end, while catcher Willson Contreras hits the market following the 2022 season.

Just in time for me to become a season ticket holder!

I'll just throw this here...

While I'm absolutely thrilled with Kimbrel's performance so far this year, it does bother me that he's got that incredibly obvious sticky substance on the brim of his hat that he goes to before every pitch. Dude - make it a little more subtle, that's all I ask.

It's impressive how every choice he makes in regards to his physical appearance is disgusting.

Lol I really do love your bi takes on average public figures

He is an ugly person who can't grow an actual human beard, so I'm not really sure what he could do differently

just a normal beard would go a long way. he's a pink faced guy so all the action shots of him are gonna be grotesque. he's just strangely committed to the goatee for no reason. he looks like he wants to be a 90s bassist

Nico already has 5 DRS in less than 100 innings at 2b this year. In his mlb career he has 11 DRS over like 35 games at that position. I really wanted Kolton Wong this offseason but I'm glad we're getting to watch Nico progress instead. And he's probably the better defender.

As a pink faced guy that is incapable of growing a full beard, I'll offer that he might not have a choice but to look like an Anthrax cosplayer.

So I think the Willy Adames trade hinted there's going to be good buying out there this TDL. It's tough to see the Cubs selling in any but the most dire situations if that's the kind of return they might be able to expect. Some of the bigger names I think we might hear rumors on this summer that could/should make sense for the Cubs:

Jose Ramirez 3B - Long shot but if Bryant the OF is a thing then he's a great fit as far as skills and experience

Shane Bieber RHSP - Cleveland's in a tough spot and doesn't spend, I wouldn't be surprised if they make the decision to turn over big. They're a very practical org, the kind that might see why you trade Darvish for blank slate teenagers, so Cristian Hernandez could go a looooong way here

Hyun Jin Ryu LHSP - Ray and Matz too, but Ryu is easily the best pitcher, oldest, and most expensive on a young, 4th place in a tough division Jays team

German Marquez RHSP - Rockies might be a one stop shop with Gray and McMahon also, Marquez hasn't lost velocity and the breaking stuff still misses bats

Sonny Gray RHSP - Underrated, perpetually available

Some of those guys make way too much money for PTR. Bieber is young and cheap, so I don't see why they would trade him. If Bryant is set for the OF, we can just re-sign Duffy as a much cheaper option than spending a lot on prospects and cash for Ramirez (I agree Ramirez is great, but unrealistic).

I admire your optimism, but the Cubs will not be serious buyers for a very long time, let's get real. The last thing they'll do is trade for one of the best third basemen in the game and/or a Cy Young. They're gonna blow it up for prospects and cash.

The Cubs will be the ones trading one of the best third basemen in the game and a Cy Young finalist in the same year for prospects and cah.

My main takeaway was that they are closely monitoring Alzolay for signs of trouble as his workload ticks up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a precautionary DL stint at one point. The Howard bit was pointing out his swing and miss against good stuff dates back to draft evals and in the past he might be a short season guy, but with that gone and their belief in his makeup they were aggressive in his placement and aren’t going to let a month worry them given the totality of the circumstances.

Alright. I’m honestly opening this for discussion here. Why is du-rag a derogatory term? I wear du-rags all the time at work. This seems ridiculous to me, but I am open to hear why I am wrong.

Du-rag isn’t inherently derogatory. As many have noted, it’s a very common thing worn by African-American men.

It’s the way that Brenly felt compelled to point out an old great like Tom Seaver wouldn’t have ever worn one that made the comment racist. It was a pointed comment on how the game has changed, and implied not for the better.

Fwiw, I don’t think it was meant to be racist. But it was insensitive. So the sensitivity training feels appropriate here.
