How deep into the organization does this horsefeathers go, though? Aren’t the chances high that if they fire Matheny, they’ll hire someone more or less just like him to replace him?

I just got around to reading that article, what a horsefeathering joke of an organization. There's totally going to be a actual fight in the dugout or clubhouse with that team at some point this year.

Not that I was particularly worried to begin with, but I feel safe in saying no FA of any real substance is going to be joining the Cardinals anytime soon unless they either overpay or their market is completely gone.

Talk about a dysfunctional organization. Their ownership/front office is a joke and it all slides downhill from there. They are asleep at the wheel.

They're like a more racist/backwater/dismal version of GARPAX.

And you know they'll be scared to ever overpay again after the Fowler debacle.

Just look at the comments their GM just made about Dex. They’ll hire the same type of guy if they fire Matheny.

Shhhh! We don’t want Mike getting fired.

I could see them landing Girardi if he wants back in. He's not great but competent enough, and checks all the cardinal-ly boxes.

They're not landing Girardi. He's too smart to go there. I think they would ask him, but he'd probably decline.

Honestly, if Renteria got fired by a Chicago team again I could maybe see Girardi signing with the White Sox. They are a team on the rise.

"My husband hits me because he loves me"

"He has the best intentions for me," Hicks told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Thursday. "I think he's nudging me in the right direction. That's the best way to put it. ... It's a collective group doing it. You have to learn 10 times faster in the big leagues. You have to adjust 10 times faster. You have to be mentally stronger than you have ever been before. You have to make all of that happen faster. I have no problem with anybody getting on me. I get that. I have to listen."

Bill DeWitt Jr., the Cardinals’ chairman since his group bought the team after the 1995 season, is as painfully aware as almost anyone else that the first 60 percent or so of the Cardinals’ season hasn’t gone exactly to script. But, as the Cardinals prepare to finish the unofficial first half of the season with a three-game series here this weekend against the revived Cincinnati Reds, he holds steadfast to his preseason estimates.

“I still believe in our club,” said DeWitt Thursday. “I think it’s a playoff-caliber club if we’re clicking on all cylinders and, hopefully, that will occur.

“We haven’t played as well as we had hoped. We’re above .500 (47-44), which is good, but I thought at this point, we’d be better.”

DeWitt does not normally get involved in daily activities but he felt the need to get in touch with Fowler after the recent kerfuffle about his “energy level.”

“I did send him a text,” said DeWitt. “I told him baseball can be a humbling game for all of us, whether it’s me or baseball operations or a manager’s decision or the players. In the end, talent and perseverance can be the commodities that will prevail and he’s got that package.

“He’s been successful. He’s had a long major league career. He’s still young by major league standards at 32. He should believe in himself. And we believe in him or we wouldn’t have signed him (to a five-year contract).

“I feel he had an excellent year for us last year. He was a force offensively (18 homers and .363 on-base percentage).”

It's nice that our players are less likely to get into a stupid beanball war, but I always did enjoy having an important position on the Cardinals staffed by an utter meathead. Mattheny was totally inept, and making it hard to attract and retain talent unless they paid through the nose, a la Fowler.

That said, I'm not too worried that they'll replace him with somebody a whole lot better. The core of that team has run out its competitive window and if the front office keeps pushing for a wild card berth every year there's not much reason for a good manager to board to a sinking ship.

They'll hire somebody pretty crappy to run out the string on the next couple seasons while they work up the courage to rebuild. I wonder what Mike Quade is doing?

I'm not the kind of guy who kicks someone when they're down.

But exceptions can be made. \:D/

I'll miss Matheny. He was a true idiot, through and through.
