A couple of other McCarver gems:

"Lackey was run from a game last year or the year after that." The year after last year...is this year isn't it?

And during a discussion of Joe Maddon:

Tim McCarver: The father of actor Jack Palance used to be Joe Maddon's plumber. Go figure that out!

Dan McLaughlin: That's Kevin Bacon stuff.

Tim McCarver: Oh Kevin Bacon couldn't do that.

Wasn't Joe Maddon's dad a plumber?

Yeah.

I watched the game yesterday with a buddy who's a Cards fan and he can't stand McCarver either. I catch a decent number of their games and all of the color guys are various levels of awful with the exception of Edmonds. He's decent but needs some more polish to really be good.

McCarver doesn't look too hot these days either. He really started showing some age all of a sudden. Or I just hadn't actually seen him in a while, which is definitely possible.

The Cards came to town winners of 11 of 14.

What was the difference between those series and this one?

“Big hits,” manager Mike Matheny said after Sunday’s 4-3 loss. “We got big hits in the last series. We had pretty good starting pitching in this series, the same in the last.

He's either top 5 dumbest managers of all time or the headshots he took as a player have really taken a toll on his brain. He says completely wrong stuff like this constantly.

Anybody remember the shows that tried to emulate Mad Men's success by calling back to the same era?

Similar to the Cardinals this weekend, the Playboy Club was cancelled after just three episodes

All the cardinal angst I saw on twitter this weekend really brought a lot of joy to my heart. Andy from Desipio retweeted an article from April entitled "The 2017 Cardinals are built to beat the Cubs" and the comments are pure gold.

Does anyone ever venture over to Cards talk? Every series against the Cubs, someone starts a thread about Bob Gibson taking Rizzo out for standing too close to the plate. It seems they get an almost sexual satisfaction imagining it. It's weird.

Derrick Goold made a thing out of it too...

Throughout the series, the Cardinals had reminded the home-plate umpires that they “had to have the plate” with Rizzo at bat. Rizzo, the notorious HBP, is famous for leaning over the plate, and he has the bruises and league-leading 23 hit by pitches to prove it. Lyons tried to bend a breaking ball in on Rizzo. The first baseman turned his back and leaned forward enough that the ball caught the flutter of his sleeve — over the plate. The Cardinals’ lobbying worked, as it was called a ball. But the Cubs challenged, and replay showed the ball flicking the jersey.

“He’s one of those guys who is a lot closer than most,” said Lyons, who lost for the first time in 89 appearances.

I remember there were Card fans that thought 2015 was a fluke and that 2016 would still be their division too. Obviously, it's a vocal minority, but its so nice to see some of those same stupids still thinking they're getting the division back, at any point. I take true pleasure that their delusion will continue to last and that every year just brings them more disappointment, than if they'd just have taken a hard look at things a few years back and realized they were fucked then.

Technically they were right. 2015 was a fluke. The last four years they won 90, 100, 86 and 84 (extrapolated).

Yup, I go there more than I'd like to admit lol. There is this weird fascination with plunking Rizzo because of how close he stands to the plate. Did they ever complain when their shitty players (F. Vina) would just stand there and turn into pitches to get on via HBP? Cards talk is terrible and I know it, but damn if the schadenfreude isn't great.

Cards talk is definitely the worst representation of Cardinals fans on the internet. I mean other than the Cardinals fans that post on Breitbart or The Daily Stormer...

The funny thing is that some of these fans still think their window for contention is "open" or that they have a realistic shot at B. Harper or M. Machado or even S. Otani (they're restricted to $300K just like us) this offseason. They're not getting any FA of that caliber and need to adjust their perspective. I mean they've won 2 WS and been in contention so many horsefeathering years since 2000, but they still complain and whine and bitch as a fanbase. A bunch of ingrates and I think this Mad Men gif perfectly encapsulates their mindset:

I've always had that series in my head as a turning point (and still am pissed Heyward nabbed Rizzo on that throw)

I thought we'd have a shot at overtaking the Cardinals had we swept that series.

This article is basically:

- The Cardinals threw at the Cubs and Joe got mad

- Two baseball teams of different talent levels played baseball games for two years

- The more talented baseball team won a significant amount more baseball games

- The writer asserts that the more talented team is not actually better at playing baseball, but rather better at playing MIND baseball against one particular team
