i like when he rattles off a list of outfield prospect flotsam as support for the idea that the cardinals OF outlook is better, as if we don't have a bunch of fungible outfielders throughout the minors too. imagine using DJ Wilson, Charcer Burks, Mark Zagunis, etc. as backing for, well, anything to do with the major league roster.

Tommy Pham, all star OF of the future, is already a full 5 years older than Kyle Schwarber, washed up has-been.

Imagine how much older he'll be in a few years.

Infinity older.

I for one am thrilled the Cardinals stood pat at the deadline. They kept their mediocre team intact when they could have at least gotten some young prospects for guys like Carp, Lynn, Gyroko, Pham, etc.

As far as the Viva article, they are quite high on some of their prospects. Their best prospect, Reyes, is coming off TJ surgery and most of the others are untested so I guess we'll see. I will concede they have better pitching prospects than the Cubs by a wide margin, but Theo and Jedd just started stockpiling pitching prospects recently while they spent the first 5 years stockpiling positional players so it's not a shock the Cardinals would have the better young pitching.

A few other notes:

-I know Kyle has been struggling all year but is there a GM in the league who would trade Kyle for Pham straight up? Pham is having a career moment for a journeyman player, Kyle still has the potential to become a very good hitter. Kyle's defense hasn't been the train wreck many predicted either. It may be Pham right now, but over the long haul what GM wouldn't roll the dice on Kyle over Pham.

-They sure love their starting pitching. Personally I'd take our top 4 in the post season over theirs. Lester, Jake, and Hendricks are proven bulldogs in the post season, with Quintana the only question mark. The real test will be in the off-season when Theo and Jed go to work on shoring up the rotation. I have a hunch Lance Lynn will be wearing Cubbie blue next spring. If they can get a good deal for Jake, it wouldn't surprise me to see his return as well, but that's doubtful.

-Dejong over Russell? Nah. Addy's going to get better at the plate and his defense is game changing. I like Dejong, but he's not going to be an everyday SS is he? I think they both will be comparable offensively in a couple of years, Dejong has the advantage right now, but let's see the league adjust to him to make any assumptions. Didn't the Cardinals have the can't miss Diaz?

-A future OF for the Cubs of Schwarbs, Happ, Heyward, Almora, and Zo matches up just fine against the Cardinals OF, probably have a slight advantage with Almora, Happ, and Schwarbs upside. I not convinced Happ's future is in the OF however.

Put another way, if I had to build a 25 man roster for this year's postseason based on the combined current rosters of the Cubs and Cards, it'd probably be 24 Cubs and Carlos Martinez.

Haha, I was about to say that maybe I'd let Molina be the backup catcher, but Avila has double the fwar!

So is this the bargaining or denial stage of the depression that the Cardinals suck and will continue to be a second division team for years?

"If the Cardinals can shore up the bullpen, find an impact hitter that can compare to a player like Kris Bryant, and improve the culture of the team(cutting down on mental errors), this team is right there with the Cubs."

Is that all?

The hat looks good on you though.

I get the denial of the Cubs juggernaut. Who would want to admit that? But how any Cardinal fan could watch that team this year and have positive thoughts about their own future is beyond me.

I love how he says that DeJong is the far superior bat to Russell based off 200 PAs. I bet that guy would have take Diaz over Russell last year also.

And they haven't even started paying him the contract extension yet.

I want them to jump the gun and pay DeJong because his crash is going to be even worse than Grichuk.

That reminded me of this horrible, smoking hot take:

Bryant has been better; there’s no disputing that. Some trend lines favor Piscotty, though.

I’m inclined toward Bryant’s future over Piscotty’s, but would peg the probability of Bryant being better no higher than about 65 percent (for example). I’d even err a little lower, because Piscotty has only begun to tap into his power over the last year and a half

This was in June of last year.

The Cardinals need an impact bat in the worst way (and have for a few years now). It's fun to watch them delude themselves into thinking that the *next* pixie-dust AAAA-star will be that guy.

Agreed. But this was a Cubs writer that said these things.

I feel obligated to root for Dejong given that I know him & he went to my High School.

It makes it hard, when my teammate played for the Tigers, that was easy.

Welcome to my world with the Red Sox. Actually it's still easy to root against the Red Sox after 11 years.

Lol well we have plenty of stupid on our side too. Gordo is still bemoaning $155 million and DJ Lamaheiu while Jon Lester and Ben Zobrist co-mvp'd a World Series Game 7, so whatevs.
