MESA – The Chicago Cubs have assigned nine players to minor league camp, reducing their spring roster from 45 to 36 players.

Nine non-roster invitees have been assigned to minor league camp: Right-handed pitchers Brandon Gomes, Jean Machi and Ryan Williams; infielders Jesus Guzman and Kris Negron; and outfielders Albert Almora, John Andreoli, Matt Murton and Juan Perez.

Chicago’s spring roster of 36 players consists of 19 pitchers (two non-roster invitees and one D.L.), four catchers (one non-roster invitee), eight infielders (one non-roster invitee) and five outfielders (one non-roster invitee).

I always figured Szczur was much more likely to go north than Murton although I question that now that I go to his page and see he had a negative dWAR last year.

Szczur has the equivalent of 30 games in the OF at the MLB level, so we won't be able to draw any statistical conclusions about his defense.

That said, he's gonna get sent down/waived too in all likelihood.

[obligatory "getcha crouton on" before he's sent down]

The alt road jersey was easily one of the best jersey's they've introduced in a very long time. Upset it's not gonna be used anymore.

On the plus side, that means they'll be liquidating those jerseys, right?

Man, I thought the alternate looked really amateurish. Those block letters are just bad. I would definitely be a fan of adding the piping to the regular though.

I'm not optimistic about Hammel this season. Not sure if it will be performance or health THO.

Hammel had been pretty solid this spring before today.

Hammel said he was battling with a mechanical issue(s) all day during his start, he's been solid most of spring. I have faith he will be more than fine this year if he's healthy.

Side injuries seem to always be worse than originally expected. I might be making that up, but that's what it seems like. But really, outside of Rizzo/Bryant/Heyward, I won't lose too much sleep over position player injuries; we'll just plug someone else in that's good/has massive upside.

There was just too much going on. The piping, the different fonts, the different colors. I'm glad to see it go.

My thoughts as well.

did heyward seem to do a LITTLE bit more of a leg kick here than his weird little toe tap thing he has done in the past?

So the actual leg kick looks the same to me from like 3 videos I watched from this year and last year, BUT I noticed that it seems like his leg kick this year lands much closer to where it started compared than last year. Last year his post leg kick would leave his back foot behind his front foot. This year, it looks like his back foot is still in front of his front foot. So basically, he seemed to drag the leg kick across his body much more last year. That was kind of hard to write out, maybe this can illustrate better.

Also, the vids I saw were from the last week of the season and the postseason. It's possible Heyward started the leg kick we see go a little bit off the ground at some point last year vs. a toe tap. He did hit like .312 over the last 3 or 4 months of the season.
