Matt Moore would be exactly what the Cubs roster needs.

No way he makes it all the way through the AL, though.

I believe the league only matters in the case of identical records now.

You’re right. Took me a bit to Google it because most of the top results were outdated. It seems since the elimination of the waiver trade deadline a couple years ago, nobody actually cares how waivers work any more.

So, practically speaking, any of these players would have to get past the Marlins, Reds, Giants, Red Sox (if they still think they’re in it), D-backs, and Twins before they got to the Cubs.

Not until Thursday right?  Burnes and Woodruff might be able to get us a little higher in the priority list, though I’d prefer they didn’t lol

Giolito has been god awful

Renfroe has been meh

Grichuk has been laughably bad

Moore has great numbers in limited innings

Lopez has even better numbers in even fewer innings

Is there a point where Trout says, “Trade me or I’m hanging it up?”

He’s 31. He’s had health problems several seasons in a row. He’s got 7 years left on his contract. The Angles are not going to be good any time soon.

Might it not be best for all involved for Trout to go somewhere else and the Angles pick up a bevy of prospects?

He had the chance to leave before he signed the extension.

White Sox putting Mike Clevinger on waivers.  He'd be a good pick up for the rotation with the for the final 5 weeks. He's pitched pretty well this season.

Thursday is going to be wild when claims can be made. There are not necessarily stars out there but quite a few players that can make a difference in October there for the taking. Like Clevinger is a piece of horsefeathers so not sure if I want him but he would immediately be the Cubs number 2 starter if he somehow fell to us. If anything it’s a bit unnerving that the Reds or DBacks will have a chance to grab a pitcher with 2.9 bWAR this year for nothing and make their team better.

The good news about the volume of guys out there is that there will likely be at least 1-2 players of value that will fall to the Cubs if they choose to grab them.

After Aroldis Chapman, I'm good with the Cubs not picking up dudes accused of being abusive shitbags.

This is by far the most important part of the decision.

The more boring baseball part of the decision is there's a mutual option for next year at $12m with a $4m buyout, so that ups the price on getting a month of pitching out of him quite a bit, either in terms of the buyout or in terms of committing to, as mentioned, an abusive shitbag for another year

Are the claims processed one at a time or all at once?

In other words, do the cubs need to submit all of their claims in advance? If so, that would limit the number of claims they can make.

For some reason I thought waivers weren't a thing anymore after they pushed back the trade deadline.

That was the "revocable" waiver process that allowed trades of MLB players that were able to get through waivers in August.

You can still waive players any time you want to. You just can't decide to pull that back if someone claims them.

Now Cleveland is trying to go for it and claimed Giolito, Lopez and Moore.

Reds grabbed Bader and Renfroe.

Going for it by claiming warm bodies with bad stats is ONE way to go about it...

To be fair they still have a slight chance and this didn't cost anything more than salary rest of the season. Can't hurt.
