I just like that the Cubs' master plan culminated in Wick, Ryan, and Wieck Voltron two years ago.

The master plan culminated in a world series and a sustained run of excellence.

Yes, the statistical investments made in 2017 resulted in the WS win in 2016. Oversight on my part.

Yeah, all of that is true, which is why I think its overfitting to attribute the Cubs's stat investments for the success of three reclamation projects. It's just a pretty small sample size. They signed some scrubs who had mild success. The stat guys probably had a hand in it, but its a reach to say those three are the fruits of their labor (or that their labor was bound or even likely to be fruitful.)

I don't think it's just those three. They were the first but not the only. Last year they found Tepera and Adam, and this year doubled down on Tepera and added Chafin. Plus ancillary guys like Winkler and Brothers who were actually pretty successful in limited roles early in the year (before getting blown up when pushed into everyday duty).

The Cubs pretty likely belong in the club of teams who can build a pen on the fly. Like hell, it's still been okay since the trade deadline. Now maybe that's less about the investments in technology and more about the change to a portfolio style "bring in a bunch of interesting guys and it'll eventually work out" approach? But I do believe it's both.

It won't truly be proven though until we see the randos accentuated with some fireballers pumped out by the player development team. Reports from Iowa and Tenn make it sound like that's imminent, but we do need to see it.

That might all prove to be the truth. I'll counter that at this point, its possible the Cubs have been using that cyrpto-hamster to make their bullpen reclamation decisions and that dumb luck has resulted in their (selectively limited) success. It isn't really the same as what the Rays are doing, from top to bottom of their organization.

my favorite part of that incident is how clemens started yelling at piazza that he thought it was the ball. like that's how you get a batter out on a grounder to the pitcher, bean the runner as he's running to first base.

Justin Turner is a silver slugger award finalist at 2B.

Justin Turner didn’t play a single game at 2B this year and has played 1 total game at 2B in the last 6 seasons.

I would say they meant Trea Turner and someone made a mistake but Trea is on the list as a SS.

"We don't market our game on a nationwide basis" goes right in there with "a piece of metal".

This guy is a horsefeathering clueless dickweasel.

I mean, they basically don't promote baseball at all, so he's kinda being honest? Baseball players are about the least marketed stars in the sports world...

Yes, he's technically correct, he's also not only supposedly in charge of reversing that trend but has actively spoken out about needing to market the game better.

If owners aren't ticked off at this statement, there's no hope.

Manfred shows how valuable it is to be extremely good at one specific thing. My understanding is he's a Jack Donaghy level negotiator. So because every five years that can be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, he's allowed to spend every other day of his life stepping on proverbial rakes.

That's exactly correct. Baseball is like a microcosm of America, it's always has been that way. They are going to degrade the game to make a few extra millions per year.

Rays are reportedly trying to lock Franco up for a decade and somewhere between 150-200m

I have a hard time imagining he'd have much interest in a deal before the CBA is settled. The game has moved heavily away from paying older players for past performance and instead investing in young guys getting below-market. I have to imagine the players union is looking to increase the cost of young guys. Franco could be a big benefactor.

Well, holy horsefeathers, he just signed for 12/225.
