Cameron has his blind spots like all of us, but most of the reason folks dislike him is that he could get obnoxious in how he communicated some ideas. I think he's a reasonably bright guy, if not one that has an overly specialized skill set for a MLB front office. That said, getting hired by AJ Preller is not exactly a huge feather in one's cap.

Jeff Passan wrote a mostly good article about why the offseason has been so slow this season (yes, the free agency system and tanking small market teams has lowered demand greatly...no, it isn't collusion) which you can read here: https://www.yahoo.com/sports/heres-baseballs-economic-system-might-broken-224638354.html

But this part made me grin:

Recently, one of the best free agents available this offseason met with a friend, and he admitted something shocking: He was preparing to sit out until the middle of the season. The market for his services this winter was so thin, the offers so incompatible with his production, that he worried he was going to need an external force to compel teams to pay him what his numbers say he’s worth. Maybe it would take a playoff race.

I wonder who could have said that?!

I was thinking the exact same thing lol. No one else comes to mind in this FA class.

It’s tough for me to see it being Jake because at worst he’s probably looking at 3/55 and probably will end up around 4/85. That’s still a lot especially since he hasn’t made a ton in his career. Moustakas was my guess because he actually isn’t very good and I could see him having only 1 year deals out there and he probably thinks of himself as a top 3B.

It's not Moustakas. It's totally about J. Arrieta. No doubt in my mind.

Moustakas is still pretty young and can probably sign a 1-year deal for a high AAV and enter the FA market next year when teams will be more open to spending. Some team that loses out on Machado/Donaldson can then sign Moustakas as a decent plan B/C for their 3B needs. Sitting out for a long time doesn't really help position players in terms of leverage unless a key injury strikes a contender at that position of need.

That quote totally sounds like Jake. I have zero doubts that quote is about Jake, and I've read very little about teams being interested in signing him. Every top team seems to be targeting Y. Darvish or A. Cobb or trading for C. Archer because Boras and Jake are asking for way too much. Boras wants to avoid the GM/Team President in negotiations. He is trying to convince ownership to sign Jake to a long-term contract like what he did with M. Scherzer except no one is falling for it this time.

If Jake goes the sign midseason route, he should just sign a 1-year deal so he can be a free agent again next year when numerous teams will be willing to go over the luxury tax.

Yeah, that makes sense. The only problem is if he has a bad year then his hopes of signing that multiyear $100+ million deal are probably over.
