He did, however, cost us Josh Donaldson (a fact that I'm surprised how many Cubs fans are completely unaware of.) Was that trade a loss?

Of course not.

The Pirates can eff right off about now.

I dunno, I kinda want them to keep going so by the end of next week they have the 2nd best record and baseball and are still 5 games back. Imagine the players their fans will want to throw at.

We should start a pool as to which pitcher the Pirates will lose to in the WC game.

They're totally getting Thor this year.

amazingly Brandon Guyer is at 3.5 WAR for his last 159 G plus he donged Jose Fernandez today, so i'm officially proclaiming we lost the Garza trade

(that's bad)

but it might have ultimately brought us Kris Bryant

(that's good!)

Chris Archer already assured me the we lost the Garza trade.

Question: if we'd gotten the same as we did out of Matt Garza in a time when the Cubs weren't completely useless, would we be looking at the trade as a loss? On the other side of that coin, Rich Harden gave us an excellent year and a half-ish in a time when it mattered. He did, however, cost us Josh Donaldson (a fact that I'm surprised how many Cubs fans are completely unaware of.) Was that trade a loss? And I get that Archer was more more well regarded than Donaldson at the time, but he was far from a sure thing. And we were able to salvage Kyle Hendricks out of Garza.

What does sting a bit is that (allegedly) it was our choice between Archer and Trey McNutt, and we opted to keep Trey.

I would make the Harden trade tomorrow if we were in the same spot. Cubs fans are aware we gave up Donaldson I think but he was a 24 year old catcher in A-ball and that regime would probably not have developed him anyway. It was the right move.

Trading a huge haul for garza before a season where the team was terrible was a bad move even after a 4.9 WAR season because of where the team was on the win curve but it's still somewhat hindsight. Even so they gave up 2 top 50ish guys for a guy that wasn't going to put them over the top.

I'm sure the Dodgers will make a run but it's shaping up to be the loser of Mets/Nats which means Thor or Scherzer unless the division race goes down to the last day or two.

Syndergaard or Scherzer seem like the obvious choices but I think it would be funny if they got dominated by Kershaw, especially because of Kerhshaw's playoff reputation (if that's still a thing).

Don't forget Strasburg as a choice, too.

Rangers called up Gallo. In the 5 days he is up, he gets 1 pitch hit AB and is sent back down.

That White Soc melt down was amazing. Some of the worst managing I've ever seen from Ventura.

This cracked me up at WSI:

even Hawk sounded utterly defeated

Isn't that Hawks' default mode besides drunken hillbilly bluster?

So in the Reds/Brewers game, Chase Anderson was pitching to Alfredo Simon and a runner on third was attempting to steal home. During his wind up he noticed it and tried to rush his delivery and slipped in the process to try and get the runner, but the ball got away from him and hit Alfredo Simon, and as a result it was a dead ball and the runner had to go back to third. It was CLEARLY not intentional. He even fell to the ground after his follow through if that wasn't enough of an indicator that he didn't do it on purpose

Alfredo Simon drilled Chase Anderson up and in when he came up to bat in retaliation and got tossed because Alfredo Simon is a fat idiot.

and yet that is one of the least-bad things that alfredo simon has done on or off the diamond.

Yet throughout the highlight, Thommy sounds incredulous that Simon would get tossed for that, as if the Reds deserved that payback.

It's weird that in our division this year's version of the brewers and cardinals are probably the teams i hate the least.

It should also be noted that Simon was the third batter Anderson had hit that day. I get if Simon wants to hit Anderson in retaliation but there's no need to go up an in. Just plunk the guy in the ass and be done with it. Of course, Simon might have been trying to him Anderson in the ass but he sucks at pitching and might have just missed his spot.

My best friend is a Reds fan and when I told him about the incident his response was "I'm surprised Simon actually hit something he was aiming for"

I got confused by the Kershaw stat about being the only pitcher in the modern era to reach 100 K's and have as few as 5 walks. I wanted to call BS because I knew Carlos Silva went a full year with only 9 walks, then I looked it up and forgot he also doesn't know how to strike anyone out and he never made it past 71 K's that season in 188 innings pitched.

Man he was a horsefeathers pitcher.

All of a sudden the White Sox have lost 6 in a row, including blowing a 7-1 9th inning lead to the Royals the other night, and are in third place. I'm not one who roots against the White Sox, but I also ain't cryin' about it.

The White Sox blowing that 7-1 9th inning lead to the Royals was entertaining to watch (such things usually are if it's not your team)

The Eibner story was a nice touch.

The Yankees managed to win a 2-1 game off of a single hit: a 2-run dong courtesy of Starlin Castro.

They're few and far between, but he does have his moments.

Was reading the Mets Refugee forum and saw this:

The personalities of the posters on that board really aren't that different than ours. They get just as frustrated and reactionary as most of us do. Some of them even seem pretty cool and would be welcome here. I still think the Cubs board is 1000x worse than WNFF.

Agree, the Cubs' board terribleness is just hard to put into words, other than the word dong.

The first part is talking about some Nats forum. The Cubs board is obviously talking about NS(B)B
