Some random dude on Twitter has been tweeting at Cubs bloggers this afternoon saying a friend who knows someone told him the Cubs and Shark will announce a 4/65 agreement this week. I normally wouldn't post it, because it's probably crap, but seeing the comment above makes me wonder if maybe it isn't bs. Edited by Ronnie Woo Woo

That would be so awesome if true, 4/65 is an incredible deal for him I feel like and should give us room to still make a significant signing

Just to be clear, I have no affiliation with the dude on Twitter and didn't hear anything about the terms of the deal.

I believe this will happen. Shark flew from Arizona to Chicago and hung out with Theo at a bar. That just seems really personal and not like a normal free agent visit.

Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and I'm an idiot.

For anyone interested, found the dude

The idea that Samardzija thinks reuniting with Bosio is the key to regaining his success seems incredibly logical.

It does. The weird part is that he'd lock in his value for the next 4 years (and into his mid 30s) rather than try to parlay that into a payday, but maybe he's tired of gambling on himself.

True, but how much value is he really leaving on the table by going 4/60-70? I mean I don't think the $100+ million contract (or even $20+ aav) is ever coming for him at this point, this year was his chance to get it and he performed to poorly. Even if he would try and do a 1 year prove it deal he's still 31/32 next year and he'd have to have to have an incredible year this coming year to make 4/60-70 look like he was leaving significant money on the table, imo.

Agreed. Plus, as far as FA destinations go, the hometown team that looks to be competitive for the indefinite future and has the pitching coach with whom you've had the most success is pretty attractive. If he really wanted to maximize his next deal he might be able to get another year, but at that point you're talking about a somewhat small risk when you think about salaries in 2020(see Lackey for a good example).

Also maybe we are offering him an early opt-out or vesting option year(s) for a 5th/6th year in this hypothetical 4/65 offer that could bring it over $100 million that really gives him a max value contract if things fall right while still locking in a guaranteed market rate contract for him (4/65).

Does he have much of a choice? Teams haven't shown any willingness yet to give up a pick to sign a guy to a 1-year deal and Cuddyer is the only one I can think of who got a 2-year deal with the QO.

So maybe he figures that he'll still get a good deal of money, get the chance to win and play for a pitching coach he apparently likes quite a bit.

I really want Samardzija at that price plus Heyward.

If that's too rich, what about Zimmerman and Samardzija, trade Hendricks + for Ender Inciarte?

CF Inciarte

LF Schwarber

3B Bryant

1B Rizzo

RF Soler

C Montero

2B Castro

SS Russell

Arrieta

Lester

Zimmerman

Samardzija

Hammel

And you still have Baez mixing in.

I don't like the idea of signing so many 30 year old pitchers, but it's another possible configuration.

Where do I go to bet against Heyward getting 20M AAV. He's getting Price-caliber AAV.

You think? I can't see it. If anything, I could even see it being slightly under 20, since I have doubts that teams value base running and defense as much as the metrics we know do. Especially since most feel defense peaks early.

I can't see him taking less than 7 years and could see him get 10. The ONLY way I see him coming remotely close to 30 per year is if he signed a super short deal(3-4 years) for some reason.

Honestly, with our young talent, we would be fine giving Heyward a short-term, high AAV deal. He makes big money and gets back on the market, we get a necessary ingredient to make a run now without tying up the money needed for long term deals for our kids when the time comes. That said, yeah, his agent is likely going to go for long with an opt-out, which makes me wonder if something like 7/180-190 is possible, with the breakdown being roughly heavy early (say, 3/90, with the backend being say, 4/100) and he gets an opt-out after year 3.

I do think Heyward gets around 25 mil for an AAV, though, if not more. If Chris Davis is rumored as a 20+ mil AAV guy, I'm going to be surprised if Heyward doesn't come in around 25, and I honestly wouldn't be shocked if a team "Seattle'd" (thinking of the Cano deal) him closer to 30 mil on the AAV. There should be enough GM's that value his contributions to get that, although to be fair, I guess they have to convince the owner as well.

That'd be fine, but I fear the price of pitching is going higher than expected, particularly if San Francisco makes a heavy splash, and thus, I'm starting to wonder what Jordan Zimmerman might get.

I'm also not certain a deal built around Hendricks will get Arizona jumping in Inciarte. This isn't a comment on the value of the deal ... just not sure Arizona goes for that sort of deal when they have mid-end of the rotation arms (although Hendricks would probably be better than most).

Having both Samardzija and Hammel on the roster + Russell (and McKinney in the minors) would be pretty funny. And to top it off, we would have Samardzija for less than what he turned down from us when we tried extending him before the trade.

I know Hammel is a possible/likely trade candidate. But, it's still pretty funny to me that we got a free Addison Russell for loaning those two out for a bit.
