It's not necessarily the results I'm praising, it's the action.

A succinct description of Cubs fans' attitudes about this regime for the last four years.

this doesn't work anymore

Sure it does. We won one playoff berth. Two more to tie Hendry. /vlahos

So I wondered how this worked with the 40 man roster. We have to keep this guy on the 40 man but only until the season starts then we can DL him? I can't recall a team ever claiming a guy rehabbing from major elbow surgery who's likely to miss most of the coming season. They must think pretty highly of him if they are willing to expose a decent prospect the the rule 5 draft to keep him. It's an odd move.

We don't have much we need to add in terms of rule 5 eligibles

Very interested in Miller if he's truly available/the price isn't crazy. I wonder how much more than Soler it would take to get Miller, Maybin and Grilli? (I would prefer giving up Baez as the main piece but it would probably take Soler to get a guy on Miller's level)

Miller seems like smoke and mirrors looking at how he outperformed his peripherals. I mean he's not terrible, but why are folks so high on him than other possibilities other than age and team control?

Yes, also pedigree and stuff. He also turned up his cutter usage this past year, which obviously intrigues me bringing in him to work with Bosio/Arrieta

thank you for posting this in here instead of making it a david price thing like that clickbait link (when it doesn't really say anything about david price)

Obviously it would take quite a bit more than Soler (or Baez) to get all three, but I've been pushing to acquire a pitcher and a CF in one deal for awhile (Miller/Teheran plus Maybin, Quintana plus Eaton, etc.).

Wasn't it John Hart who was all gushy over Albert Almora when the Cubs drafted him?

I actually think the Cubs match up well with he Braves because the Braves don't seem to expect to compete for a couple years. That may allow them to use young top prospects and allow them to keep Baez/Soler.

Does Torres and McKinney get Miller?

4.07xFIP, 4.16xFIP and 88.3% of his pitches are a fastball or a cutter. I wouldn't pay anywhere near what it would likely take to land him.

yeah i don't really get wanting to pay what the market will likely dictate for shelby miller

Jim Duquette of MLB.com seems to think it will take Billy McKinney and Willson Contreras to pry Shelby Miller away

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/158170980/5-mlb-trades-that-make-sense

Braves trade RHP Shelby Miller to the Cubs for OF Billy McKinney and C Willson Contreras

The Braves have been the most active dealers over the past few months, so let's close out with one more deal from them.

The Cubs are hunting for a young, mid-rotation starter and should focus on Miller as their guy for a couple of reasons. First, he is entering his first year of arbitration and would be controllable for at least three more seasons. Second, at 25, he continues to improve, and with his heavy fastball-cutter mix, Miller would benefit from being around Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester, two pitchers with a similar repertoire.

McKinney, the Cubs' No. 2 prospect, would become the Braves' best hitting prospect. He reached Double-A at the age of 20 after posting a .976 OPS at Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach, one of the toughest hitting environments in the Minors. Contreras, Chicago's No. 10 prospect, hit .333 at Double-A and would give the Braves long-term depth at a position that continues to give them problems.

In today's MLBTR chat:

What is Andrew Cashner worth?

Not all that much. One year and $8 mil or whatever he's projected at. If you really believe in him and think he's going to deliver a good year, then sure, there's excess value there. But it isn't long-term value b/c he'll be a FA.

I mean, he's obviously not a guy who's just sort of worth his contract, but I have a hard time seeing a club parting with a significant prospect asset at this point.

If we can get him without parting with a significant prospect, wouldn't he be a decent addition to our rotation depth?

no thanks on shelby miller

Especially not if Contreras is involved. Ew.

I don't think I understand this sentiment. Contreras is a fine prospect, but Shelby Miller is a reasonably proven commodity at a position of need, and at an ideal time. The years of control and his age are also quite desirable.

I may be buying into his 2015 a bit much, but if that's the start of his ascent toward "prime," a prospect like Contreras is well worth it to me.

He's not that good and primarily a 2 pitch pitcher. There are far too many pitchers available to pay the price tag for Miller.
