After seeing the play, the umps got the call right. It was the ump's fault for calling time as he can't do that in that instance, and ruling Odor safe was the right call, and Odor earned that run with a heads up play. Common sense prevailed, and the only crime would have been if they hadn't counted the run and the Rangers had lost 3-2.

Also, the Rangers were by far the worst team in the postseason this year on paper, so it's surprise they even came this close. Their pitching was nearly as bad as the Jays' pitching in the first half, and Cole Hamels (no hitter notwithstanding) wasn't as good as many think he should have been this season. Plus, their offense was mediocre as well.

Selfishly, I'd like to see the Astros, Rangers and Mets in the CS as they're the weaker teams, but it's also enjoyable to see the best teams play longer, so I'm really rooting for the Jays/Royals/Dodgers to join the Cubs as the best 4 teams on paper in baseball this season.

I wouldn't mind a bit if the Cubs signed Cueto in the offseason.

btw for anyone trying to make an analogy of the play tonight and the whistle blowing in football... you actually can get a fumble recovery on a ball that was whistled dead in the NFL. I believe it happened to the Bears last year. The key (in the NFL) is it actually has to occur in the immediate action of the play, which would appear to be the case here.

Royals and Blue Jays ALCS is going to be a brutal game. Keep in mind, those two teams nearly brawled with each other several occasions during the regular season.

I go to about 20 Royals games a year. I am having the season of my life right now! The thing is I would be even if the Royals only won 70 games this year. I cannot put into words how awesome this is.

All blue teams left. Jays, Royals, Cubs, Dodgers and Mets.

They absolutely could congregate and change a call.

Not when they had previously ruled the play dead. I mean, the rule on the books(as silly as I think it is) was correct for Odor to score there, so the end result isn't super unjust, but umpire calling a play dead killing everything that's ongoing is not a fact that it's in doubt. Unless you have a replay review, the umpire's ruling is an eraser to anything that could be considered in progress.

This. Much more eloquent than my reasoning.

When home plate umpire and crew chief Dale Scott called time, he was wrong. He admitted as much.

“That was my mistake,” Scott said. “I was mixing up two rules and I called time, but then it started clicking. I went, wait a minute, wait a minute, there’s no intent on the hitter. He’s in the box, the bat’s in the box. So to make sure I’m on the right page, I got everybody together and that’s what we had. If there’s no intent, if he’s not out of the box, that throw’s live.”

The Blue Jays’ other defense was that because the umpire called time before Rougned Odor came in to score, the play should have been dead. But umpires award bases on dead balls all the time, when it’s obvious that the runner would have reached it without a fuss.

Not that deadspin is some ultimate authority on the topic or anything, but I happen to think they're right.

I honestly do not understand why anybody is bringing up football refs in this discussion, or how they are pretending it was wrong after the fact. It's obvious that run was legal. It would suck to be a home fan and understandable about being upset. But third party viewers should easily be able to comprehend why the eventual call was correct.

There will be so much blue from here on out. Death to all things red or reddish.

it was a good read

Nearly as good as that inning was. I really miss firejoemorgan.com In fact, firejoemorgan was so great it actually offset the miserable existence of the actual Joe Morgan. Yin and Yang or something or other.

Yea I mean the only way you could reverse that run I think is if the defense was actively making a play on the ball and stopped play immediately as time was called. As it played out the defense basically stood around even as the play was still called live.

These pregame shows have been God-awful. What the [expletive] are these guys talking about?

TBS needs to never, ever come near a baseball game again after this postseason. The forced photoshop humor ala the TNT NBA show is painful.
