It is a dead ball the moment that the umpire put his hands in air and called dead ball. Anything else is a moot point. Who's to say that a Blue Jay would not have thrown him out had the umpire not put his hands in the air?

Didn't the umpire call time before Odor crossed home?

There was NO WAY he was going to be thrown out... he was already in motion towards home and more than halfway there. There was no chance for anyone to get to the ball before he reached home. They got the call right.

Yes this is the best point even setting aside the absurdity of whether or not it should be a dead ball. The umpires do not have the authority to unilaterally say 'sure he would've scored if I hadn't killed the play'. Mayyyybe with replay, but certainly not the way it happened.

Yes!! That trumps everything else. Like a ref whistling a fumble dead.

That would be the dumbest way to be knocked out of the playoffs, ever.

What happened for those of us not watching?

Martin received a pitch, threw it back to the pitcher, throw hit Choo's bat(who was in the box and not reaching over the plate) and bounced away. HP Umpire called time with Odor partway down the 3B line, but after consulting with the umpires they ruled that Odor's run counted. 3-2 Rangers.

Based on the rule they just quoted, the umps nailed it. Curious to know if them waving it dead makes any difference, but there was certainly no way in hell they were throwing him out at the plate.

The throw from Martin back to the pitcher hit the bat of Choo and bounded away in foul territory. The runner on third alertly raced home.

Runner on third for texas, pitch is thrown, catcher throws the ball back but it hits the batters bat incidentally. Runner on third comes in to score and the question is if it is a dead ball or not. The home plate ump put his hands up quickly, but they conferenced and gave texas the run. Now its fallout following that.

Blue jay fans are being [expletive] jackasses though. Throwing beer cans onto the field and [expletive].

I have a feeling Wrigley would have responded in a far worse manner if this happened to the Cubs at home.
