McCovey Chronicles on Schwarbers HR last night:

More than the distance, though, was the sound. It was a violent, ugly sound, just a complete rejection of the pitch and everything that Cain ever stood for. It was the sound that could only be made by an inordinately strong rookie who was too inexperienced to know that baseballs can't be hit that hard.

Hopefully Hendricks fixed his mechanical issues or whatever was wrong and pitch a quality start tonight. If he does decent, we got this. [expletive] Jake Peavy

I believe, all the Cubs have to do is win 29 games the rest of the year and we'll make the playoffs no matter what everyone else does.

This is correct by solving the following system of equations. You're welcome, David:

x = Cubs remaining wins

y = Giants remaining losses

z = Dodgers remaining losses

x+y=31

x+z=34

y+z=7 (Dodgers and Giants play each other 7 times, so they will combine for at least 7 losses).

x = 29

Or you can just go look at the highest elimination number in the standings at MLB.com while you drink your beer and not have to do any math.

God baseball writers suck when playing the myth making game.

It's Grant Brisbee, he's not being overly serious. This was the opening paragraph.

On a summer night, in the middle of a pennant race, with the loathsome Dodgers already victorious, the Giants looked completely incapable of ever winning another baseball game. The other team hit baseballs high and far, consistently and repeatedly. The Giants didn't get a hit through three innings. When the other team scored a run, it came with an ex-baseball catching fire over the horizon. When the Giants scored a run, it came on an error and a groundout, and they were happy to have it. The highlight of the night was Brandon Crawford working a 12-pitch strikeout. After swinging through the final pitch, he chucked his bat and helmet, vintage Rich Aurilia-style, frustrated, hurt, and alone, just like everyone else watching.

But that gives you 31 and I like math and don't like beer.

Statistical oddity I learned today: The Cubs, Cards and Pirates have all lost on the same day exactly twice this year.

The best part is that it wasn't even his loudest home run of the last ten days:

my rough back of the napkin math might be off, but if all three teams played on the same days (obviously not true) it should be expected to happen about 7-8 times. so a little bit of an oddity.

combined winning percentage of the 3 teams is .611, which means on the whole they lose 38.9% of the time...chance of it happening 3 times in one day would be about 5.9%

Schwarber/Denorfia/Coghlan in the AT&T outfield with Hendricks on the mound is somewhat terrifying.

Yeah, I like Brisbee, it's clearly meant to be somewhat facetious.
