Fangraphs playoff odds at 97.7% this morning

Officially have a better chance of catching the Cardinals than falling out of the playoffs.

So, there is potential for an interesting scenario. Let's say after play on 9/27 or 9/28 the Cubs magic number over both the Giants and Dodgers is 2 and/or 1. Since the Giants and Dodgers have a 4-game set against against each other, at least one of them will lose at least 2 games. So it's mathematically impossible to not win a playoff spot in that scenario. When do you celebrate clinching a playoff spot?

Eh, I'd rather just keep bludgeoning everybody and have it locked up by then. :wink:

If that does come to pass, I'd say you celebrate when the magic number flips to 0.

I wish I could create gifs. One with Bane (Schwarber's face) breaking Batman's (Peavy's face) back would be great because that's what Schwarber is going to do after Peavy throws at him.

If the Cubs go 19-19 the rest of the way, the Giants would have to go 27-10 to pass the Cubs. Of course they would likely pass the dodgers if they did that, so the Dodgers would have to go 25-13 as well for them both to pass the Cubs.

I believe, all the Cubs have to do is win 29 games the rest of the year and we'll make the playoffs no matter what everyone else does.

This is correct by solving the following system of equations. You're welcome, David:

x = Cubs remaining wins

y = Giants remaining losses

z = Dodgers remaining losses

x+y=31

x+z=34

y+z=7 (Dodgers and Giants play each other 7 times, so they will combine for at least 7 losses).

x = 29
