Seems to be no secret that they're shopping Castro. I doubt highly that they're moving Soler.

Yeah, Soler is what would surprise me. I really like him so I hope they hang on to him.

My friend (who is a Sox fan) just texted me and said that Soler and Castro are out of the lineup today. I said it was probably just rest.

Any ideas?

Basically this Tigers sucking streak is probably the worst case scenario for the Cubs long term. We probably would have better odds getting Price as a FA than we ever will in a deadline trade, especially with the recent struggles probably making the FO lukewarm on being huge buyers

I may be misunderstanding your point, but from that POV wouldn't that be a good thing for possibly getting Price? He wouldn't cost a draft pick, which was a stated reason the FO was so excited to go get Lester. Unless you're saying you think whoever trades for Price would be able to lock him up long-term.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com "strongly believes" that the Phillies will trade Cole Hamels to the Rangers.

Salisbury is well-connected with the Phillies and it's the second time in the last few days that he's listed the Rangers as the favorites for Hamels' services.

The only thing that gets to me - more than the tediousness of all this and the amount of allowed [expletive] labeled as trade rumors - is how OK Cubs fans are with mediocrity and the potential of doing nothing. No wonder Lovable Losers stuck as Cubs owners laughed to the bank.

There's a subset of Cubs fans that are overly wedded to the prospect brigade, and another subset (which I'm begrudgingly on the fringes of) that doesn't think think this iteration of this team is likely to justify a win-now move. I'd like for things to be going better, but I can understand the POV of not wanting to make a move the way the season is playing out.

I'm not satisfied with doing nothing, but I'm also not gonna act like I don't understand why they would choose to do nothing in this situation.

That's just an unfortunate bi-product of the Twitter-era. Everyone wants to be the first to break the big story. Whether or not there is a story is irrelevant. One guy says something like " pulled from the lineup" then another comments on it, and others comment and retweet. Before you know it, it reaches a credible-ish source, and it blows up. It's basically a gigantic game of telephone.

While I'd be disappointed at standing pat, I understand this is how Theo has operated since he got here. He's not going to wildly overpay for someone, so if the asking price is too high for a TOR starter right now (with the decision aided by the Cubs mediocre play over the last month), he will move to plan B to add one in the offseason. I'm sure it wouldn't be his ideal scenario, but neither is including Schwarber in a deal for Hamels or something if the asking price gets into that range.

I can understand not wanting to go all in for a mediocre rental. But there's no excuse not to be just as aggressive as anyone else in persuit of guys who can legitamately improve our chances, especially those under control beyond this year.

Ooh. I mean if Upton were up for an extension, then absolutely. If not, I don't know. If we made that trade, we missed the playoffs, and Upton walked, it would feel a bit too Brock for Broglio.

The fact that it reflects how Epstein has operated since he got here is *why* it would be disappointing. We were promised that if the team is in the hunt, it would be different. And I still think it will be.

For the Rangers, I'll assume that this would be more geared beyond this season. This being said, I wonder if we could spin this into a 3 way for Gallardo.

I hate how disappointed that makes me

Remember when Epstein told Zambrano he wasn't going anywhere?

I don't think that's necessarily saying he won't be traded this year. Maddon was just telling him he wasn't getting taken out b/c he was being traded last night.

but I can understand the POV of not wanting to make a move the way the season is playing out.

I cannot because that is incredibly stupid.

2015 was never the year!

It's incredibly stupid, and way more common than it should be.

I STILL hold out hope that Hamels will be following Lester and Arrieta in the rotation come Friday.

Its stupid to fall back to that as an excuse for standing pat, but its not stupid to look at the situation (2.5 games out of a spot for a 1 game playoff on the road to get into the division series) and the market (seems to be a lot of teams rich in money and prospects chasing guys like Hamels and Price) and the team (a bunch of high potential but struggling and inconsistent young hitters, 3 of them in their first full seasons) and make the determination that it's not worth giving up someone the caliber of Schwarber (or maybe even a rung below) for a 10% better chance of making the division series in one season when there are several attractive FAs to go after in the offseason that won't cost a top prospect (but will cause the loss of a first round pick).

At least that's how I see it.
