Wow, another serious screw job on Storen. He absolutely doesn't deserve to have to give up his job to Papelbon - he's a better pitcher.

I'm curious to know what the reaction will be around here if the Cubs do absolutely nothing. I'm starting to think that's the most likely scenario.

That's a delightful knee-jerk reaction.

I'm a little surprised the Cubs didn't beat that offer on Papelbon - they could have done so pretty easily. You have to assume his salary had a lot to do with it.

The Cubs aren't that good and they're probably not making the playoffs, even if they do make the playoffs, they have little chance of doing anything. Giving up anything for a rental when this is the case isn't very smart.

Yeah, the return for Papelbon is pretty underwhelming. Makes me think the Cubs don't have a lot of money to work with right now.

True things about Jonathan Papelbon:

  • He's an a-hole.
  • His fastball velocity has been declining for years.
  • His strikeout rate has declined from his peak.

More true things about Jonathan Papelbon:

  • His walk rate has gotten significantly better to offset the loss in velocity and strikeouts.
  • His FIP in Philly is 2.84 (2.60 in Boston)
  • Despite playing for a terrible team, his WPA is the 3rd best in baseball amongst relievers since he joined the Phillies.
  • Jonathan Papelbon is still one of the best closers in baseball.

False things about Jonathan Papelbon:

  • He sucks.

I've never understood the Papelbon hate.

Not really. The Cubs don't match up on Hamels and Price isn't on the market. They have said they aren't interested in rentals i.e Samardzija,Kennedy etc. Various reports say they're not in on Shields. The only person they're even being tied to is Tyson Ross.

I've seen them mentioned in connection with plenty of players. Theo has generally been a pretty active guy at the deadline whether he's buying or selling. If you think it's more likely he doesn't make any moves with 3 days to go, you're overreacting.

See?

If Rizzo bounces back to being Rizzo and, like, one of Soler or Bryant starts hitting like expected things suddenly start looking very different. There's a lot of baseball left, but typically masochistic Cubs fans are convinced it's impossible that something like Rizzo just being Rizzo will happen.

I think a lot here will be disappointed but the majority of fans will be fine. The "well 2016 was the year anyways don't want to trade the prospects for rentals anyways." Will be a common theme, imo. Personally I get if a big name acquisition doesn't happen but I'd be disappointed if we at least don't do a De La Rosa/Venable/Parra /Burnett type acquisition

And Castro is fixed. Didn't you guys watch the game last night?

And if we're 52-49 and 8 games out of the division next year, it will be "2017 was always The Year. We're built for the long haul, there's no hurry. Let this young team mature naturally."

If they don't add a single starter of any caliber I'm going to be pretty unhappy. I'm the biggest Wada fan around, but they can't rely on him or Beeler or whatever other castoff they can buy for a PTBNL to take 20% of the remaining starts.

Lol I was just reminded of that episode where Rachel sleeps with her assistant Tag

THE DUDE'S NAME IS SPONGEWORTHY AND I WASN'T REMINDED OF ANYTHING.

I was reading about the sponge birth control thing on wikipedia and when I went back to nsbb, spongeworthy's post was at the top of my screen

I'm expecting perhaps a non closer reliever and Will Venable type move. So, not literally nothing, but pretty close.
