Hopeless optimism; it just means they're waiting for the next executive to have final say over the entire staff and Trestman isn't going to be forced on anyone.

Ok, @ProFootballTalk says Emery is out. Trust me, there is a new plan that George McCaskey has crafted that involves new football leadership

My friend is saying PFT is saying Trestman may be safe though. Linked me an article that I can't read.

Nothing on PFT's site or twitter....

lots of people assuming this is the story.

It can't be true. But if it is, laughably stupid.

Only way it's possible would be if they're gonna let the new GM/management make that decision?

What if the new GM wants a new HC this season? By the time he gets here all the good stuff will be long gone,

EDIT: I suppose that could be true either way.

Unless they have a GM already lined up, and it's a quick hire.

I'm just relieved that both Emery and Trestman are fired.

I'm not relieved until I know Phillips is pushed to the side as well, though the tweets about McCaskey leave me hopeful.

ESPN article says they are bringing in a consultant. I'd guess this means Phillips is in trouble as well.

It should be noted the rumors are that its a football consultant and not a headhunter agency ala Angelo.

Id still rather they just hire someone, but it's a little better.

I'm guessing he stays, just isn't making football decisions. Business only.

They should have him work on a deal for stadium improvements. Go start some conversations with Rosemont and get CPD to do some renovations.

Out of curiosity, what does Ted Phillips do for football operations except hiring the GM? I want him gone too at least from football ops but it's more because I want ot see blood rather than understanding what he has done wrong (other than hire Emery)

Emery getting fired increases the odds of the Bears cutting ties with Cutler, imo.

imo as well.

I still think Cutler is a great candidate for placeholder QB the next 2-3 years as you build your own system from the ground up. If you fail with him, that's not on you and you can get rid of him with no cap ramifications and relatively affordable cost just as your choice in QB is ready.

But I'd bet at least 50% of next head coach/GM candidates would prefer to cut ties immediately.

It's not that clear really, but I think he is/was heavily involved with league offices and just the overall architecture of the administration level of the organization.

Maybe. A new person may judge the situation dispassionately and see no way out of Cutler's contract unless they are willing to punt next season and perhaps 2016 as well.

Yea. I'd like to keep him as that placeholder, but a new GM is going to at least buy themselves a lot of fan goodwill by moving on immediately.

I hope there is a legitimate effort made to compete for next season, either way.
