This was always a big risk. Now you get [expletive] from the public for signing an abuser of women and you don't get the benefit of his play.

[expletive] the Bears.

@TimBaffoe: "An alleged victim, I think--much like anybody else who has a bias in this situation..."

@TimBaffoe: "...there's a certain amount of discounting in what they have to say."

Those were quotes from when he signed in March. Still stupid to say when you know there's a decent possibility that they will come back to bite you in the ass.

I'm obviously not glad he hit another woman and endangered a child but if it was going to happen I'm glad it happened now so I don't ever have to cheer for a team he's on.

If they don't cut him within 48 hours I'm seriously going to shop for another team, and I'm as loyal as they come.

Sounds like you don't have to wait 48 hours

Yeah, I know they were from when he signed.

It's stupid to say and a stupid way to think or operate.

Think McDonald ever plays in the NFL again or will the Cowboys sign him?

Depends on if he gets charged, IMO. If charges get dropped someone else may do what the Bears did and rationalize it. Though it depends if he misses time or not.

He's gotta get a year suspension after Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson. This sounds like it could be a combo of both. 6'4", 300lbs and likes to hit women. I hope he goes to a prison somewhere for the next several years. [expletive] this dude.

I'm really, really glad he's off this team. It was an incredibly insensitive and stupid move in the first place. He can go [expletive] himself.

Holllllllllllly [expletive], how did I miss that. This team can seriously go off and [expletive] itself. I hope they have a piddling season that results in a shitty draft pick.

I mean, from a strictly football perspective, there wasn't any risk...it was zero money guaranteed.

Right. I meant strictly from a PR/karma standpoint.

Since I suck at Twitter, that's what the Bears tweeted to Baffoe? I imagine he criticized the signing and that was their response?

I really didn't mind the signing that much, but defending these guys up to the point of victim shaming shows they are pretty out of touch.

No, Baffoe was tweeting old McCaskey quotes from when they signed him.

that would be his tweets quoting the Bears statement.

Ray McDonald is a complete piece of [expletive] -- but the outrage over the signing is inconsistent with what occurs in the NFL every season. He was accused of assault, not charged, and then when he was charged, they released him. It was a low-risk (no guaranteed $), high-reward move. It blew up and they cut him.

Just about every NFL team has employed athletes who have been accused of (or charged with) serious crimes. Assault/battery (domestic and otherwise), DUI, reckless endangerment, gun charges... guys accused of and/or charged with these are still in the league -- even when the crimes or accusations are felonious. It sucks to feel like you have to cheer for horrible human being who plays on your team, but that dilemma is just a part of the NFL and the rest of pro sports.

I'd have less of an issue if they hadn't come out with that whole PR campaign about how they vetted him thoroughly and talked up his character.

That's the reason they look so awful right now.

That campaign and the quotes from ownership were completely foolish. Why stake your organization's reputation on a guy with that kind of history? Rookie PR move.

Yeah, they went out of their way to let the world know George was against it from the start but was persuaded by McDonald buying his own plane ticket and then having a conversation with his parents.

Plus, Fangio "vouched" for his character. They should have said we are taking a chance on him and expect him to be on the straight and narrow and leave it at that.

Hub's article was essentially correct, but horribly misguided in its timing. They weren't "wrong" in taking a chance on the guy, but they did handle it wrong and now is not the time to plead their case.
