Mort says he signed

Assuming Marshall was dumped for character issues, it seems odd to turn around and sign this dude.

i think the marshall thing was as much about a declining old WR coming off a bunch of injuries as it was about his need to run his mouth publicly with crazy crap

i'm not totally sure they make the same move if he's coming off his 2012 or 2013 season.

I think that is crazy talk.

It was largely about the side issues and helped to justify by the fact that he's not as good as he once was. But he would still be the Bears best receiver.

McDonald has been accused of violence against women twice in the past seven months, but escaped charges both times. The second incident cost him his 49ers roster spot, but McDonald is now suing the woman who accused him of sexual assault. Going on 31, McDonald will be reuniting with ex-49ers DC Vic Fangio in Chicago. McDonald remained one of the league's better 3-4 ends last season, but it's surprising he's found a new team so quickly considering his off-the-field issues.

In football terms only, he's a great signing.

#Bears are close to agreeing with DE/DT Ray McDonald on a 1 year deal, according to a source close to the team. More details to come.

Yeah, but Marshall was pretty high profile, and cost a bunch of money. It's not a 1 for 1 in terms of distractions. You can jettison this dude whenever.

Gonna be a ton of guys on 1 year deals. This is looking more and more like the NFL version of a rebuild.

So he apparently hasn't even been arrested on either accusation. What's the story?

I am sure he would be today. Maybe one day Jeffery will be better but he is not yet.

Dropoffs for 30+ receivers can come quick, especially with dudes coming off a bunch of leg related and groin injuries...granted, he's not all that dependent on speed.

Could swear Zaidman said he wasn't 5 minutes ago. Maybe I misheard.

Considering he's suing one of them back for defamation, I'm not sure that is the case on that one.

I thought dumping Marshall was more about his unwillingness to be the type of football character they wanted rather than anything to do with his checkered personal past. Basically, McDonald isn't insisting on a weekly radio show and won't be a combative and controversial locker room guy.

arrested, but charges eventually dropped, I believe is the sequence.

Was arrested but never charged. Sounds like the investigation was bungled. I just remember him getting arrested because I was thinking he wouldn't be able to play against the Bears in week 2.

I'll give Abbatacola one thing... the other day when he was hosting with Bernstein, he called Bernstein out on the "by the time they're any good" crap about the Bears and that this is the NFL and they could be good next year, particularly with such an upgraded coaching staff. Bernstein just politely disagreed of course rather than berating him like a caller.

I love the "Why get cheap, good players if you aren't going to be good for three years?" line Terry keeps dropping. But I just don't think you can be as sanctimonious as B/B and consider yourselves the last bastion of sports journalistic morality and also just say "Well Pace isn't trying to raise my kids."

Kyle Long defending the new guy on twitter.

gotta love twitter dopes talking about those who are "quick to judge" and "live in glass houses" as if assaulting woman is something we all do.

Aaron Leming @AaronLemingNFL

I was made aware of the interest mid-last week & it took multiple meetings that I know of to even make a contract offer to McDonald's agent.

@AaronLemingNFL: the signing of Ray McDonald was not easy for the McCaskey family. Was told they had multiple meetings

I guess you get bonus points for agonizing over doing something crappy before doing it.

Allegedly assaulting a woman.

Jarvis Jenkins isn't a bad signing, or necessarily just making a move for the sake of making one. He was a former 2nd round pick. Tore his ACL his rookie year. Was decent in 2013 then dealt with nagging injuries again. But he's the type of player Fangio has had success with in SF.

The DL in SF the years under Fangio has pretty much had Justin Smith, McDonald, and a bunch of guys picked after the 5th round or UDFAs. Carradine is the only other exception and he missed his rookie year with a torn ACL.

most of us don't allegedly assault women either.
