That Mariani dude looked pretty good last year. Not sure he serves any other purpose other than returning kicks, however. Given the need to improve at a lot of positions on defense, I'm not sure having a specialty player who can only return kicks will be in the best interest of the team.

Maybe I had tuned out by then, but weren't we the world's worst return team last year? Didn't it take us to around week 10 to return a kick past the 20?

I think it wasn't until week 11 until Mariani began to play.

Would have rather had Pierre Thomas, but Quiz is decent. Wonder how they will use him because he's a terrible option to run the ball. Something like 3.7 ypc in his career in 305 carries. Not a good number when you consider he has big play ability. Of course, Atlanta is terrible running the ball.

Some salary numbers came out today.

Mason Foster got 825K total. Vet minimum plus a signing bonus.

Ray McDonald got 1.05Mil base, with 455K in incentives, nothing guaranteed.

Alan Ball surprisingly got 3Mil for 1 year. Of course, it was rumored that he was offered (and going to sign) a 1-year deal for 2.8Mil in Carolina before he took the Bears' offer.

Mariani was a very good return man for the Titans, for what it's worth. Not much of a WR, though.

Bears signed OLB Sam Acho, formerly of the Cardinals, to a one-year contract.

Acho, a 2012 fourth-round pick, has been a highly-ineffective pass rusher across four seasons, generating just two sacks the past two seasons, but he did receive positive marks from PFF for his run defense in 2014. The Bears are transitioning to the 3-4 defense and need capable bodies to bring to camp.

#Bears have informed C Roberto Garza he will be released.

Woah. Who is replacing him?

Was with the Broncos last year and was drafted by Fox in 06' with the Panthers. Ranked 15th overall at the C position last year according to PFF, 2nd in pass blocking. His run blocking prowess seems to have dipped from his last year as a Redskin but that ability is there too. Felt like Garza would be a Bear until he retired.

I'm guessing this is a de facto retirement.

Unless Lovie really needs a backup

I could see someone bringing him in mid-season as an injury replacement.

Bears locker room takes a hit with the loss of Roberto Garza. He brought toughness, fiber, grit, work ethic and class.

Sounds like the team is gonna be a bit backed up next season.

Considering the disaster that was the locker room it may be they built up a tolerance to his power.
