Someone explain this to me from a Braves perspective that makes me feel good that the Cardinals didn't just trade a mediocre starting pitcher for good position player. Who are Walden and Jenkins?

Heyward was clearly gonna leave ATL after this year.

Cards get 1 year of control for Heyward, 2 years for Walden. Braves get 4 years of control for Miller, and 6 for Jenkins. So the Braves get players under control for a guy that was gonna bail.

Right, but they have to be hoping for Miller is better than mediocre, right? I mean, if you make this trade in November you must be thinking this is the best it is going to get.

Side note: Post-Dispatch ran a story on Jenkins in today's paper. Irony. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cards-prospect-jenkins-ready-for-his-closeup/article_e8287802-418b-5504-9b04-7ac9549c715e.html

Not sure about Jenkins but Walden made the AS Team for the Angels in 2011 and has been a solid if unspectacular middle reliever for awhile.

Thanks. I posted before looking on B-R. I assumed he was a prospect. Relief pitchers that are not closers have to be the least recognizable players in baseball.

He was the Angels' closer, and has closed off and on since. You might remember him as the guy who has both feet off of the ground midway through his delivery.

Ah, I do remember that now.

Son of a bitch. That's a good trade even if Heyward bounces. Great trade if he re-signs.

Theo had better pull a rabbit out of his hat because losing a player that projected absolutely perfectly for this team on that type of [expletive] package is inexcusable. If they want a pitcher then bring in a third team.

No, it's not.

No, it's not.

Letting a team that is already better than you get significantly better for minimal cost isn't what I'd call good strategy. Especially when that same piece fits your own team really well.

Heyward essentially replaces Taveres, doesn't he? That's one way to look at this - is Heyward likely to produce as well as Taveres might have?

Given the number of prospects that don't reach their potential, Heyward is definitely the better bet.

Cardinals are talking about this like a short term move...plus Heyward seems pretty intent on testing FA, so hopefully that happens.

wait is this a serious question?

Forgive me if I am wrong, but wasn't Taveras considered a consensus top 3 (or 5) prospect who OPS'ed .953 at age 20 in AA? Meanwhile Heyward's OPS has dropped significantly each of the last three years and he hit 11 HR's last season. So yes he was better than Taveras last season, but that wasn't likely to continue, so its a probably a net downgrade.

I'm just trying to look on the bright side here.

Jason Heyward is one of the best players in baseball. Definitely top 5 for RF. He was a 5 fWAR player last year and has averaged more than 4 fWAR for his career. HR aren't everything. He's every bit as good as a guy like Rizzo.

Don't forget his descending OPS....

If you are correct that Heyward is one of the best players in baseball, then the Cards just pulled-off a historic heist at the level of Anderson-Bagwell, Mozeliak is an amazing GM, and John Hart is a schmuck.
