The Red Sox are picking up Sandy Leon from Washington, which probably means they aren't going to get Castillo(or maybe more accurately, were never interested). Hanigan and Leon until Swihart is ready will probably do the trick for them.

In case anyone was keep tracking of our Rule 5 guys we lost:

Braves claimed LHP Andrew McKirahan off waivers from the Marlins.

McKirahan was a Rule 5 pick. The Braves were among a number of teams reportedly interested in the lefty. The 25-year-old posted a 3.00 ERA in nine innings prior to being placed on waivers by the Marlins. He's not the sexiest name, but could offer relatively immediate help in the bullpen.

The Braves just traded for Cahill from the D'Backs for a 24 year old OF who's never been above A ball. D'backs are paying about half his salary.

Talk about selling low. Cahill had a FIP under 4.00 last year and is still 27.

How many wins did he have? Huh?!? Can't get much in return for a guy with a 3-12 record.

So, my initial reaction was that the Cahill deal seemed bleh for the Dbacks. That got me intrigued enough to go check out a Diamondbacks board to see how they felt ... and oddly, they seemed pleased with it. Part of me wonders if it's Stockholm Syndrom of some sort ... the main points those fans seem to argue is that they needed to trim 3 million off the budget, Elander could be a lotto ticket, Cahill struggled last year, and they wanted to get Archie Bradley in the bigs. Still ... there are Elander type, older guys in most orgs, and unless you are really confident about someone, I'm not ready to really buy that. Bradley starting the year in the bigs also starts his clock. Oh, another potential corner OF.

Dunno, I guess I can sort of understand why they made the deal, but I'd rather gamble on Cahill finding something.

From Roto...

Braves released LHP Wandy Rodriguez.

Just two weeks ago manager Fredi Gonzalez said that Rodriguez had secured a spot in the rotation, but he had since backed off that statement. The left-hander was great this spring, posting a 3.13 ERA and 23/8 K/BB ratio over 23 innings. He shouldn't have an issue catching on elsewhere. Eric Stults is now expected to serve as the Braves' fifth starter.

From MLBTR:

5:15pm: The Braves will acquire Maybin and Quentin, Rosenthal tweets. The Braves will also acquire pitcher Matt Wisler, as FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi tweets. McDaniel tweets that the Braves will also receive outfield prospect Jordan Paroubeck. Rosenthal tweets that the Braves will also receive the 41st pick in this June’s draft.

5:11pm: The Padres have acquired Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr. (formerly known as B.J. Upton) from the Braves, Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs tweets.

5:09pm: The Padres have completed a trade, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. It’s not yet clear which players are involved. Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller tweets, however, that the trade could involve Cameron Maybin or fellow outfielder Carlos Quentin, which would make sense given the Padres’ roster construction.

wtf, Braves? They basically just gave Kimbrel away for nothing.

Just noticed Wisler is in the trade, too. Missed that the first time around. Still, that's a disappointing return for the guy that might be the best reliever in baseball.

Maybin and Quentin for Upton is a bit of a wash. Swap of bad contracts.

If you take those out, it's Kimbrel for Wisler, Paroubeck and the 41st pick in the draft. It's not terrible for the Braves, though they could've gotten more. And man are the Padres gonna be amusing to watch this year.

The Braves got two very young prospects, a draft pick, and removed about $70 million over the next 3 years. They weren't going anywhere this year anyhow.

All I ask is that somebody films the moment when they tell AJ Preller that some players bat left handed.

Braves said that by moving into the new stadium they'd be able to increase payroll now and in the future. Then they traded away their stud players because they didn't want to pay them.

I think trading Kimbrel was a smart move. They're probably not going to compete until 2017, and for closers, sometimes even the dominant ones, success is often fleeting. Better to get something for him now while his value is high, imo.

That said, I'd be less than thrilled with the actual return if I were a Braves fan.
