Per UZR, Alcantara played CF at a -7 rate last year. His arm was well below average, and his range was above average. One would hope that with more time at that position both may tick up a bit more. The biggest improvement can probably come from him being below average with errors/mistakes, to the point that he's a capable defensive CF.

I'd be okay with Rasmus on something like 1/10. On one hand, his K and BB rates at are trending in the wrong directions (we have enough low on base guys) and he's not going to play a full season.

On the other hand, CF is the one spot where we have a legitimate power shortage and I like the idea of Rasmus playing against righties. It does open up the question of what to do with Mendy, as I'd like him to continue to get PAs.

Not really

Not to get into semantics, but

Not really

I came back here to argue with you but I guess I didn't realize that Steamer had projected 13 HR for Mendy. Sexy.

Mendy hit 10 for us last year in 70 games while struggling badly at times; I'd put 13 on the very low end for projections.

Keep pissing them off, Bryce!

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said that club was "disappointed" that outfielder Bryce Harper did not show up Saturday at the NatsFest fan festival...."We're disappointed he's not here, but he chose not to be here because of the grievance," Rizzo said.

This is what I was thinking. Cost is going to be crazy high if it ever happened and the new team will require and extension.

I wonder if the Cubs would consider trying to get Alex Rios on a one-year deal. He's RH and he's no star, but he's not terrible - probably a better everyday LF than any of their in-house options.

are there any good defensive lf that are white and have the same build as coghlan and could play lf without the other team noticing? this doesn't seem like it should be that difficult to pull off, especially if "coghlan's" new gimmick is holding his glove over his face in the field.

I [expletive] hate Loria

The Marlins do not think they’ll have to pay out the entire $325MM balance of Giancarlo Stanton‘s contract, Pirates president Frank Coonelly told a crowd (including the Tribune-Review’s Rob Biertempfel) at PirateFest Saturday. Speaking very candidly for a team president, Coonelly recalled a recent conversation with Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and president David Samson: “They said to me, ‘You don’t understand. (Stanton) has an out clause after six years. Those first six years are only going to cost $107 million. After that, he’ll leave and play for somebody else. So, it’s not really $325 million.'”

I don't think there was much doubt that this was Loria's thinking. I know that's exactly what I thought his idea was, that Stanton will opt out after one of his patented fire sales. How many of the players they are acquiring this offseason do you think will still be on the team 2-3 years from now?

The entire thing is a sham, and Loria is an unscrupulous piece of [expletive]; that's not a revelation. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and I was pretty shocked that Stanton didn't see through the pretense of Loria's "commitment".

It is somewhat surprising that he would come out and say what he did.

They are doing a full Jim Hendry rebuild. I don't mean that entirely as an insult.

Looks to me like they're essentially propping open the existing window for 2-3 years while they assemble something resembling a farm system. And there's really nothing wrong with that, as the alternative would be to shop Sale and Abreu, which would really bring in a hail, but decimate their fan base.

Asdrubal Cabrera: what happened to this guy? Injury or just a drop off? I didn't even realise he was a FA. After being one of the top young players in the game, he's coming off back to back dissapointing seasons. He's only 29, so could he accept a 1-2 year self gamble type of contract? He played 48 games at 2B last year, so he could be a fit.

Well they're going for it. Mariners and Royals wanted him but weren't willing to go three years.

Why do you think they are all of a sudden going for it this year and not the last couple of years? The conspiracy theorist in me thinks Reinsdorf is responding to the rise of the Cubs.

As long as they have the cash from JR to do both at once, absolutely.

The alternative would be to do what they did last offseason and acquire guys who can help beyond this year. That's not the easy path, but now they're at 110-115 million in payroll and their roster still isn't very close to being one of the best in the AL. It's reminiscent of the pre-2014 Royals.

Tempted to pick the White Sox to win the AL next year but then I remember Robin Ventura is their manager

The AL?? The hell?

They're gonna cost themselves a Kris Bryant

Do people not understand how contracts work? Stanton has the option to collect $325MM from Jeff Loria if he so chooses. Loria does not have the option to stop paying Stanton after 6 years. Loria did not do anything unscrupulous in this case and the criticisms of him in this case are idiotic.
