Arizona has done pretty nice in my opinion the last couple of days. I understand the Hawks and the Rangers needs, but both teams paid a lot for the players they received.

Draft picks in NHL are not the same as those in the NFL. Just a thought.

The NHL draft is more like the MLB draft with a touch of NFL. There are a few players who will be drafted and immediately begin playing with the NHL teams, but most players that get drafted need to develop, playing for the AHL, ECHL, foreign teams, and in the NCAA.

In the NHL, draft picks can retain their amateur status. Last years first round pick for the Hawks is currently playing for the University of North Dakota. The Hawks retain the rights to sign him but those will expire eventually, like Kevin Hayes.

Speaking of Hayes, the Hawks actually still have a second round pick for this year (#54) because they didn't sign him.

How long is Vermette under contract? He's not just a rental is he? That's a lot to give up if so, though I don't have a problem with it. Man, if these guys can get it together fast and learn to play together, getting Kane back will be unstoppable. They're going to miss Kane though.

They will likely recoup the picks this summer when they trade off Sharp or Bickell.

I can see Sharp pulling a 1st rounder. Bickell what, a 3rd?

Really looking forward to tonight's game. Thanks Kaner for not waiting a week to get hurt.

Yeah but if playoff Bickell shows up maybe a 2nd. And if its to a bad team it will be a high 2nd pick which is really the same as where the Hawks would pick in the late 1st round this year.

Edited: Troy freakin Brouwer fetched a 1st round pick in 2011. Bickell if he plays like playoff Bickell could as well.

Also, will probably get a pick for Raanta, possibly as soon as today.

I like both these moves for the Hawks. In a year when the Hawks were throwing out a lot of different guys on defense, Dahlbeck couldn't stick. I've heard only good things about him but he was hardly can't miss and next year he loses his waiver exempt status.

As for the draft picks, the Hawks can't find room for the guys they have that are ready now. No one they were going to get with a late 1st round pick was going to be a sure thing regardless of how deep this draft is supposed to be. The fact that the teams that expect to make the playoffs are trading away their draft picks is telling.

Morning skate lines were:

Versteeg-Toews-Teravainen

Sharp-Vermette-Saad

Bickell-Richards-Shaw

Nordstrom-Kruger-Smith

Hossa wasn't at skate, but likely will take Teuvo's spot, who will likely sit.

Ben Smith got traded to SJ? No idea what for...

that's interesting

draft pick?

In return for Ben Smith to San Jose, Chicago gets the Sharks' Andrew Desjardins #NHLTrade

Teuvo should play on the third line, move Shaw to take Smith's spot. But what do I know.

A 4th line center? For $750,000 in salary cap relief? Also expiring contract.

Really? What about it looks good? They traded a decent young guy essentially for the right to not have to employ him next year. I guess if you think Smith is absolutely worthless then this could be perceived as good.

Hawks have Desjardins, Rundblad and Versteeg all at 50 percent salaries. Stan Bowman being creative to manage the cap

Well done, Stan.

I guess now that they have Vermette they don't need Ben Smith on the PK. Maybe they think Shaw or Hartman can fill his roll on defense. Plus this opens up a spot for Tuevo.

They need room to re-sign Salad.

Should we take the fact that the Hawks are going "all in" during a season where their best player won't return until the WCF as a sign the Hawks are going to be gutted in the offseason? Or just being creative with the extra $5 mil from Kane?
