I could give a crap about the pick itself, but the financial flexibility having it affords them in doing what they did last year and using the extra slot money to get additional high upside guys later is the big downside of it for me.

Nothing is stopping the Cubs from employing the same strategy to a slightly lesser degree even without a 2nd round pick. Or they could go completely the other direction and sign a full or over-slot in round 1 and go cheap in subsequent rounds. I certainly don't expect or want them to stick to the same strategy in every draft. Losing a second round pick really isn't that big of a deal, especially compared to the first round picks they might have to lose in coming years.

.@Jim_Duquette on Lester "it sounds like to me the Red Sox are out and they're trying to start the spin process"

Illinois has lower State Income Taxes, but much higher Property Taxes that will even that out. At least close enough that someone making $140 million wont care.

i'm guessing you didn't do the math on that

Of course not.

Autocorrect, it split it to two words and I deleted the space before realizing the error. Oh well, I'm going to guess that that one misspelled word just pushed Lester to SF.

Who was it a year or two ago who was supposed to have signed during the winter meetings but ended up signing weeks later and practically nothing of huge importance happened at the winter meetings as a result?

If #Cubs get Lester, industry source says next move would be to pursue big bat and try to accelerate revival. A bat in addition to Montero.
