That's pretty good, but even a Baez/Russell + Soler + Almora + Johnson/Edwards package seems like more than any other team could offer. And then there's still the risk he doesn't extend and hits FA. That'd be devastatingly crippling to our rebuild.

I think it's a Johan Santana type situation where a trade doesn't get agreed upon unless the acquiring team agrees to an extension before hand. If Stanton refuses outright and insists on testing free agency, then both teams are fucked on Stanton. That is something I did not consider in that rambling. That said, it should lower the asking cost considerably, and the Cubs could conceivably acquire him for a year and try to extend him, and if not, trade him for even more prospects if he continues to insist on FA at the deadline...

Are you kidding? Stanton is exactly what we need. I'd give up that package in a heartbeat for Stanton. That gives us not only a strong foundation of proven young stars in Stanton, Castro, and Rizzo, but with Bryant, Baez or Russell, Schwarber, Alcantara, and McKinney, our farm is still just as strong as it was going into the season.

And if you think about it, the Cubs could give him a good deal that gives him an opt out at his age 31 season when he could make another big FA splash. I know that sounds like a silly idea because the Cubs would let him go, but it would be after the 2019 season when that happens and the Cubs should, theoretically, be...

I don't think Theo & Co. give up a big package of prospects like that without knowing whether or not Stanton will be a Cub beyond 2015. I think they make the offer, negotiate the extension, and agree to it when it all comes into place. If he won't do an extension, they make a lesser offer, and even then their "lesser offer" is still probably better than anyone else can give them.

in the hypothetical world that we are trading for Stanton. The guys I'd let go are Baez, Almora, CJ Edwards, Pierce Johnson. Not as comfortable losing but still ok to part with Soler and Alcantara. Not all of them mind you. They are just the guys in the top 10 I don't mind losing. I really want to see Bryant and Russel stay with the Cubs. And to a lesser extent I favor guys like Alcantara and Soler over Almora and Baez.

You know what, screw it, I'll play along.

Baez, Soler, Vogelbach and their choice of Pierce Johnson or CJ Edwards for Stanton. Extend him for whatever he wants in perpetuity.

5/$90m for Lester. Whatever Maeda ends up going for, do it.

Ruggiano/Alcatara/Stanton

Bryant/Castro/Valbuena/Rizzo

Castillo

Lester/Arrieta/Maeda/Wood/Jackson

Add Rivero and Vizcaino to the bullpen

Love Stanton and I'd love to have him, but the packages are a bit over the top. When you're saying Baez+Alcantara+Almora+CJ for him that's a top 10,20,50 and 60 prospect. To the best of my knowledge, there is no trade in the history of baseball where that much prospect talent has been moved.

I'm perfectly fine keeping these guys. We don't need Stanton.

But we don't not need Stanton either. They will be fine without him, but I think the timeline remains 2016 as the year they get 100% competitive and a playoff favorite. Adding Stanton makes them contenders immediately, and the FO has said they wouldn't make any bold moves for star players unless it made sense for them.

Stanton makes sense. But like you said, they're fine without him... but they'd be a whole hell of a lot better with him.*

*if he agrees to an extension as part of the trade

Thanks last 5 pages I basically will now be disappointed if Stanton isn't in our opening day lineup next year

Yeah, that's the stupid part. It's really hard to avoid going from "well, it might make sense but everyone will be in on him if they even trade him at all so who knows" to it being impossible to post a 2015 projection without someone insisting you include him.

I'm okay trading for Stanton (duh), but I'd prefer Russell over Baez as the lead piece. I believe in Javy. I want the power. Just imagine Alcantara, Castro, Stanton, Rizzo, Bryant, Baez back to back in the lineup.

A part of me will, too... but then the other part will still see what we have without him and be like

The fact that Baez is batting 6th in that scenario because that's where he fits naturally in that lineup...

I agree. It's probably silly prospect love, but I want to see Baez as a Cub.

joe buck during the red sox game:

i just look at what the cubs are doing, and they're in a position now where, okay, they've got young players again, but at some point don't you need to add some guys that you can build around to go forward? i mean, it becomes ridiculous. if you're a cubs fan, you go "okay, yay. we got more young guys that are coming up into their 20's." good for billy beane, good for the a's, but for the cubs, it's just more of the same.

this is my transcription, but i think i've got it word-for-word.

Even Joe Buck is in on the Stanton circlejerk.
