most likely in the minority here, but sandberg retiring mid-season never bothered me that much. his reasoning as to why he did was laughable (losing the desire to get ready for each game) where it was obvious that his wife/divorce was the real reason. same with sosa leaving early on the last day in '04...so many positive memories eclipse that one incident.

I don't recall how I felt toward him at the time. My fandom was around its low and the lockout was coming. But I remember being really disappointed at least. And I am more annoyed about it now given the hypocrites who hammer the younger generation for their indiscretions and how they treat their team/teammates. Chief among them Ryno and his BS "kids these days" speech.

Joe Borowski of all people is the voice of reason:

"I think they're skirting around the issue," Borowski said Thursday on "The Carmen & Jurko Show" on ESPN Chicago 1000. "You've got to remember what he did for that organization when they were awful. He was filling seats because of what he was doing on the field. As an observer and also as a teammate, the Cubs created the monster. They allowed him to do whatever he wanted to. They never said a word about it. But when the production started to decline, that's when they started saying, 'You can't do this. You can't do that.'"

Joe may have a soft place in his heart for steroid use…

He is right though.

And whether they like it or not, Sosa, Mcgwire, Bonds and other "users" brought a lot of interest back to baseball when fans were very tired of whiny millionaire players, and billionaire owners.

i was 11 at the time and i was more bothered as to how much the cubs sucked and the impending strike than anything else. with treblehorn doing the firehouse chats and the lack of quality players (as far as players worth following, sosa was still a small blip on the radar and grace was having an OK season), there wasn't much to root for. i also remember that the same week that sandberg retired, the whole OJ thing was unfolding so whatever annoyance i might've had towards sandberg was washed away by the spectacle that was to become OJ SIMPSON plastered all over my television screen.

I'm having a really hard time caring about this at all. Was the 100th anniversary a big deal in Chicago? I haven't seen or read or heard anyone talking about it anywhere except here and then only afterwards.

Has anyone considered the possibility that they invited Sosa and he told the Cubs to go pound sand? That would explain why he wasn't there and why PoorTomRicketts didn't say much about it.

With you.

Loved Sammy as a player. Was pissed when he ditched the last day, but have seen so many other egregious acts by other players of the teams I love that I'm willing to forgive.

But.....

I could give a rat's ass about Sammy Sosa and his relationship with the Cubs. Could care less about the 100th birthday of Weeghman Parlk/Cubs Park/Wrigley Field. With so many other pressing issues, this is so far off the the meter it doesn't even register.

lol, who is he going to sit down and work things out with? the essence of cubdom? nobody who he potentially offended is even there now...so stupid.

corporations are people. sammy has to sit in a room with the cubs logo an apologize for being mean to it.

This whole thing is [expletive] ridiculous. To require a man who is arguably the best player in the history of the franchise to prostrate himself in front of the meatball fandom and an ownership who wasn't even there when he was a player over what was at least in part a smear job by the organization is just preposterous.

No one would be mad at him if they weren't being told there is something to be mad at him about. In the grand scheme it doesn't make much difference, but this production is just asinine.

So this basically means he has to apologize to Wood right? Does Wood have to buy him a new stereo in return? If this is the arrangement I'm okay with it especially if Wood has to buy him a big ass 2004 stereo.

I think people are assuming it's Wood because he's the only one left.

I think this is some kind of weird high-horse crap coming from Ricketts. He really must think Sosa should come in and bow down, apologize to "the organization."

And the stereo is so big and clunky Sammy can't manage to shake Kerry's hand so he either doesn't shake Kerry's hand or drops the stereo and breaks it, and we talk about if his disrespect at the reconciliation ceremony warrants banishing him again.

Notice Kerry doesn't say anything about inviting him to the number retirement ceremony though.

Unless it's Hollandsworth. In which case Sammy should have to tell him he's sorry... he sucks so bad as a media figure the Cubs chose [expletive] Ron Coomer over him.

Otherwise I've exhausted my list of the 2004 Cubs with any sort of current affiliation with the club.

Have any of you heard or care about the things/attitude Sammy has now? The dude is nuts. He calls for his own statue.

I loved him as much as any Cub fan, but I have ZERO problem with him being stiff-armed, until he has a shred of humility and changes his whole personality.

I don't really care that SF has welcomed Bonds back, or that McGwire is now a respected hitting coach and pushing around a crippled Kirk Gibson - Sosa and his ilk are crap. They are terrible role models for our kids, and a disgrace to the game. It was enough for Sandberg to backhand him in his HOF acceptance speech, and any Cub that I respect has little respect for Sosa. Kudos to the Cubs organization for taking out the trash.

I can't believe I'm obviously the only person on 4 pages saying this.

so, why exactly are you against him being welcomed back? i'm just asking because it appears that you can't put your finger on it either.

i would like to see a press conference where Sammy shows up in a wheelchair and Jed and Theo struggle to get a Cubs jersey on him.

There are apparently few things that this organization is unable to completely [expletive] up in the most embarrassing ways.
