Oh yeah, that Ellsbury guy, too.

This I don't care about. Doesn't fit in our window and we were never going to out-bid the Yankees. Plus, outfield is not a need.

Buh-wuh?!?!?!?

Outfield is pretty much our biggest need. We have no good MLB outfielders. Not one.

I don't necessarily think the Cubs should've paid Ellsbury a boatload of money, but this is simply a ridiculous statement. We have maybe the worst offensive outfield in baseball, including the Astros now that Springer is up.

you can't replace that with money and victories.

He'll get the former but not much of the latter.

STRONGLY disagree. The Yankees are never going to wallow in bad baseball for long.

They're going to wallow in mediocre baseball for very long.

Unlikely.

This is a joke, right? The outfield is a nightmare of awfulness.

Right now it is, look at our system.

And? It's hardly like they have all 3 spots locked down.

The odds of Almora, Soler and Bryant all becoming starter-quality big league outfielders without incident are about the same as us making the playoffs this year. The overwhelming likelihood is that for one reason or another, at least one will not become what we hope they will. If Theo's really banking on that, we really are screwed.

Ellsbury would give us a few more wins these next two years but in three years when we might actually be contending, he'll be 33 years old with a bad contract.

Reasoning like this is the reason it might be three years or more before we're actually contending.

I agree that all of what he's saying is ridiculous...that said, I wouldn't go quite that far.

This is terrible logic on multiple levels. The Cubs, with their resources, shouldn't have to be pinching pennies and completely ignoring a guy like Ellsbury when their OF now is barren and because they have several prospects who might pan out over the course of several years. Having a logjam with your projects is a good position to be in; leaving things shitty praying that they pan out and you're fucked if they don't isn't.

Exaggeration, probably, but the point remains the same - if Theo's little prospect experiment is really his only plan for making us good (not that I'm saying gscool thinks that it is), we're gonna be bad for a long time, because some aren't going to make it.

it's actually been the Cards so far (.600 OPS)...we've been about 100 points better than that

I have to believe that they'll spend money when the time is right. If 2 of those 3 prospects pan out, it's not going to be too hard to find a solid outfielder to fill in that 3rd spot. Now, that's no excuse for not going all-out on Tanaka who the Cubs have an actual need for.

Of all three being long term starters for the Cubs? I don't think it's that much of a stretch.

This Tanaka guy is pretty good. We were valued at $1.2 billion last year and made $266 million in revenue. We should probably make a splash and sign him.

A lot of pitchers have looked good against the Cubs.

This...this is just a terrible, terrible post.

Was I wrong? I don't think I'm really stretching to say that the Cubs hitting has not done well. Tanaka may well have been great (I'm only watching gameday) but lets not pretend he's going against murderers row here.

Sure am glad Olt got the start against a righty.

of all the things to be annoyed by today, i'll put "getting ryan sweeney at bats" pretty far down on the list.
