Oh yeah, that Ellsbury guy, too.

This I don't care about. Doesn't fit in our window and we were never going to out-bid the Yankees. Plus, outfield is not a need.

This is a joke, right? The outfield is a nightmare of awfulness.

Right now it is, look at our system.

But who do we know is "making it" for sure?

we don't even know if Bryant will make it, or if he'll be an outfielder.

We also need pitching, so if we happen to develop too many outfielders(yea, right) we then deal for pitching.

but we can want to sign someone all we want…they have to want to sign with us.

Right now, it's a tough sell.

In a year or two it'll be much easier.

I'd add they have shown a knack for finding/rehabbing veteran starting pitchers

It would be interesting to see who some of these names brought them in trades..

Beginning on MLB Opening Day up through August 31st, a club can temporarily add (recall or select) a 26th player to its MLB Active List on any day where two games are scheduled, as long as the second game was scheduled at least 48 hours in advance:

1. The "26th man" must be on the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) or has to be added to the club's 40-man roster that day.

2. The "26th man" does not have to be a pitcher.

3. The 26-man Active List limit is in effect for both games of the doubleheader, but the "26th man" cannot be switched between games.

4. A player can be added to a club's Active List as the "26th man" even if he has not spent the minimum required 10 days on optional or outright assignment prior to being added.

5. The player who was recalled as the "26th man" can remain on the Active List and a different player can be dropped the next day, as long as the "26th man" was not called up prior to spending at least ten days on optional assignment. NOTE: A player called up as the "26th man" prior to spending at least ten days on Optional Assignment could remain on the 25-man roster if the player replaces a player who is placed on the Disabled List (or other MLB inactive list) the day after the doubleheader.

6. If a player is recalled as the "26th man" and is optioned back to the minors the next day, the "10-day rule" clock (prohibiting a player from being recalled until he has spent at least ten days on Optional Assignment, unless he is replacing a player who is placed on the DL or other MLB inactive list) does not start over again. However many days toward ten that the player spent on Optional Assignment prior to being recalled as the "26th man" counts.

7. A player recalled as a "26th man" accrues one day of MLB Service Time.

What does the bold mean?

That's a really odd way to put that. I'd guess it prevents them from scheduling a night game to complete the double header on days where there's a day game on the schedule already. That doesn't really make any sense and I can't imagine that this situation would ever come up.

There's a pretty good starter for the A's on that list. And a guy who may be an OK major leaguer in Iglesias. And Rizzo.

Not bad for you picking out one year in an attempt to make them look bad against what sneaky posted.

It seems pretty clear to me what it's saying. If the doubleheader was shceduled for a month from now you can use a 26th man, if it's a case like today's DH you can't. Assuming the basis for this is, so no one team is at a disadvantage should their AAA team be on the other side of the country with 12 hours to get the guy into town. I'm guessing Blake Parker got sent down and whoever reported it is off. It doesn't make sense for Rosscup to only be on the roster for the 2nd game.

ETA: Muskat is the only one I see reporting it, so it's almost certainly wrong in some way.

I picked that year because Theo has been in control for 5+ years and they still had their prospects that were moved for AGon. Was not trying to cherrypick a bad year. If I took the next year it would look worse because Rizzo isnt on the list.

I found the other guys post which listed some major leaguers and then said "all epstein prospects pan out" QED to be an oversimplification of things.

They could use it today because the regularly scheduled game was the night game and that's been on the schedule forever, so the 26th man rule could be used.

The rule says you can have 26 guys for both games, so it does not make sense that they would call up a 26th man specifically for game 2. I am guessing you are right, but maybe there is a rule that says you can use a 26th man in game 2 if the DH was scheduled under 48 hours?

Posted

Yeah re-reading it, I guess you're right. Still doesn't make sense why Rosscup wasn't active for the first game.

But it's very screwy if that's the interpretation that just the night game had to be scheduled 48 hours in advance. So if today was a 12:05 scheduled start, you couldn't use a 26th man? What the hell is the logic in that?

Good god, let's at least wait until some of the prospects are called up and are playing for the major league team before we crucify Theo.

Yeah. It's not like his job involves the major league team in any way.

Good point; it's like there's another aspect of the job or anything.

Aww, look at you channeling Kyle.

You've reached a new level when you refer to yourself in the first person - nice job

I was particularly infuriated when I read the two articles on Soriano yesterday. One where they talked about how awesome Soriano is with young players and one where Theo talked about how the Soriano trade worked out great for both teams.

Kyle's got a record. Kyle's jumping for dollars. Kyle and George are gonna get rich.

(the percentage of people you interact with on a daily basis who are too young for Seinfeld references is depressingly non-zero and growing every year).

Wait, why did this bother you so much?

Posted
Because the trade did not "work out great for the cubs" as theo stated. Maybe the guy we got for him contributes, maybe not. He not a top prospect now, maybe he could become one. I dont understand how the deal worked out great for the cubs.
